Crosslé 42S, 1980 Historic Sports 2000, ready to go
Description:
Sports 2000 was introduced in 1977 to make proper sports prototype racing available on a relatively modest budget, and its popularity continues today.
The original series included cars from Lola, Tiga, March, Chevron and Royale. Although in numerical terms these dominated Sports 2000 grids in GB, works driver Jay Pollock liked to upset the establishment with Crosslé 42S when the opportunity arose.
Two Crosslé 47S (the 1982 version) finished on the podium at the 1981 SCCA National Championships at Road Atlanta against regional winners from across the USA (arguably the most significant Sports 2000 race that year). One of the last Sports 2000s with tubular spaceframe chassis, the 42/47S was a very competitive car.
This is 42S-80-13, delivered originally to GB agent Jubilee Racing who ran David Leslie as a youngster. From 1981, owned by a family well known in Northern Irish motorsport, the car ran in sprints, hill climbs and circuit racing. They upgraded this 42S with a Millington engine, AP Racing 4-piston brakes and aerodynamic wings and venting.
After sale in recent years to its present owner the engine was returned to Sports 2000-legal Pinto spec but the 4-pot calipers and wings remain. Brakes could be easily replaced with the simpler (and less costly) LD20 originals, rear wing easily removed.
Part of a notable private collection the car has been professionally prepared, maintained and stored to a very high standard in readiness to race at short notice. Changed plans mean that the car is offered for sale, ready for action.
Bodywork is painted Tangerine Orange and in very good condition.
With Crosslé still very much in business and operating continuously from its original factory, 42/47S owners are uniquely privileged in terms of parts and support. The original chassis plate is fitted.
Sports 2000 today in GB includes a Historic (Pinto) championship for cars built using the 2 litre Ford Pinto engine. This captures the spirit of the past and the cars remain true to the period, offering excellent racing at major UK circuits. In Europe, historic endurance racing offers exceptional opportunities for Sports 2000 cars. With factory-supplied endurance kit (including 80-litre fuel tank and lighting) similar Crosslés compete in the unique ‘Deux Tours d’Horloge’ 24H for historic sportscars at Circuit Paul Ricard and other endurance events.
The car shown here on track is a very similar Crosslé 47S (not 42S-80-13).
42S-80-13 can be viewed by prior arrangement near Luton airport and transported anywhere at competitive rates.
