History
Built at the Crosslé factory in Northern Ireland. Chassis number ‘C5S-64-13’ was ordered new by renowned Irish racer Brian Nelson in March 1964. This is a very rare 5s model - as only six were built during 1963 & 1964 and only Brian Nelson’s was originally fitted with a V8 - a Daimler SP250 engine coupled to a Jack Knight gearbox (Later 7s & 9s models were fitted with larger V8 - Ford, Buick and Oldsmobile engines).
Nelson, who is remembered as one of Ireland’s top drivers in Formula 2 and International Rallying, competed in ‘C5S-64-13’ throughout the 1964 & 1965 seasons in the Guards Trophy at Phoenix Park, Bishops Court and Kirkistown. Over the winter of 1964 & 1965, the car was modified to accept the wider bodywork introduced by the factory for the 7s model, continuing to compete throughout the 1965 season with the Daimler V8. In 1966, in line with other cars being developed by the factory, it became a longer wheelbase 9s with a 2.0-litre BMW engine. ‘C5S-64-13’ was then sold to Michael Martin and then to John le Sage, who fitted a 2.5-litre Repco engine.
Around 1968, the Crosslé was brought to the USA by Robert Winkelman, subsequently passing into the ownership of Jim Profit. He sold the car to Jim Wallace in 1977, who in turn sold it to Jim Miller in 1980. Jim Miller then proceeded to race ‘C5S-64-13’ until November 1988, firstly with a ‘215’ V8 Buick engine and latterly with a larger Oldsmobile V8. Jim Miller passed away in April 1989 and in February 1990 his widow sold the car to UK historic racer Neil Davis who returned the car to the Crosslé factory in Northern Ireland for a complete restoration - installing a Ford ‘Iron Block’ V8. Crosslé were able to confirm its history, noting that it had even retained its original 1963 Girling brake calipers !
In 2016, new owner John Monson instigated further development restoration done by historic race car specialists, R M Wilson Engineering - installing the current 4.6 ltr Oldsmobile/Buick V8 breathing via quad 48 Weber IDF carburettors.
In 2019 the car was bought by Historic Formula Ford Champion Cam Jackson who competed in The Guards Trophy, the 2019 Goodwood Members Meeting and the Revival, where he finished a magnificent 1st in the Members Meeting and 3rd in the Revival – now a successful race car, but in need of restoration in December 2021 the Crosslé was bought by Matthew Wurr.
He and the OK Racing & Restoration team spent OVER £43,000 and OVER 2000 hours on the restoration which was completed early 2023
