Alexis Mk6 restoration project
Description:
This is an opportunity to acquire and restore a rare historic single-seater with documented provenance. An Alexis Mk6 in period specification should be eligible to participate in events including hugely successful race series in the UK and Europe for 1-litre Formula 3 'screamers', or as early F2.
Thirteen RAC scrutiny passes from hill climbs at Prescott (Bugatti Owners Club) and Shelsey Walsh (Midland Automobile Club) together with results from 1994 identify this as the Alexis Mk6 campaigned by Jeremy Thurston in Class 15 for Classic Cars, with 1588cc power.
The car was acquired from England by Northern Irish collector Tommy Reid with Lotus-Ford Twin Cam and Hewland gearbox, both removed for other projects and no longer available. The Alexis itself was never driven during Tommy’s ownership and remains largely as he purchased it, stored for most of the last 30 years in undisturbed period patina.
The Alexis Mk6 was a dual-purpose F2/F3 chassis, its best result as Formula 3 screamer in 1964 coming at Monza with Australian driver John Ampt. Allan Taylor and Peter Watts raced Alexis Mk6 in 1965-67 according to https://www.classicf3.org.uk/2017/Manufacturers/Alexis/alexis.html
This car includes what we believe to be its original chassis, a traditional spaceframe of mostly round tubes with square-section upper rails and alloy panels folded and riveted. A roll hoop has been added and later extended.
Rear uprights are fabricated, with 14SP brake calipers. Drive shafts have outer UJ’s and inner spiders with 4” PCD for Metalastik Rotoflex couplings (not included).
PCD at front wheel hub is 3-3/4”, rear PCD is 4-1/4”. Wheels are not included.
There is no engine or gearbox but parts include an engine bay subframe, mild steel exhaust manifold and silencer, aluminium swirl tank, filter bracket and braided oil hoses.
Five-part GRP body in BRG includes cockpit section with Dzus fasteners, two side panels and removable nose with timing strut for hillclimbs. No engine cover.
Tachometer is a Pro-Comp Memory Auto Meter, 0-10,000 RPM with three-way tach/recall/ease switch on the dash. Willans harness was manufactured in 1993.
The car needs a complete restoration plus engine, gearbox and some related fittings. Wheels and tyres will depend on specification. This is a rare car and an exciting project for a modest initial outlay. The car is located and can be viewed by arrangement at the Crosslé factory near Belfast City Airport. We will be happy to arrange delivery anywhere.
