Description:
Based on a UK-spec 968 Sport, the car has been maintained here at SVP since returning from a period spent in Dubai. It was most recently used in hillclimbing events as part of the Porsche Club GB Speed Championship, where it was a real crowd-pleaser.
The current owner purchased this car in 2009 as a road legal track day machine with a number of improvements. The car was exported to Dubai, where it was used on track a number of times before a decision was taken to race it.
To prepare for racing, an FIA cage was fitted professionally. The engine was rebuilt by EMC Motorsport (well-known 968 race builders) with an aluminium flywheel and Helix Autosport clutch. A new seat, harness and electrical kill switch were added.
A set of 18-inch RAYS Engineering ‘Volk Racing’ lightweight forged wheels was purchased. Front brakes were upgraded to the highly sought-after 993 ‘Big Red’ calipers with Pagid Blue Pads. Rear brakes were left standard as they are more than good enough. An 80-litre ATL fuel cell was fitted to the car, with Lexan side windows and a lightweight rear hatch.
Following two years of occasional competition in this spec, the 968 was replaced by a Radical and the car returned to the workshop. Gaz dampers and a KAAZ limited slip diff were fitted, also an M030 rear anti-roll bar and Powerflex bushes.
A supercharger kit was purchased from Speed Force Racing in the USA, along with a new Hayward Racing inlet manifold and uprated Lindsay Racing driveshafts. The starter motor was also replaced.
The 968 returned to the UK the following year and arrived at SVP. We completed the supercharger installation and had the car mapped (dyno printout shows 314 bhp engine power). We upgraded the pedal box, fitted remote fluid reservoirs and replaced the alternator. The car was set up for the PCGB Speed Championship with softer springs for hillclimbing.
Work done in 2015 includes dash removal and lightened doors with a new Lexan rear hatch. The rear wing has been fitted to meet hillclimb regs. It has had a quick paint job in black (the original factory colour), the exhaust was modified to side exit, a new catch tank was fitted, along with a new mass air flowmeter, now relocated to reduce the risk of damage. It has also had a new sump. In addition and before the season start the gearbox was re built. This included new 2nd and 6th gears, new bearings and new syncromesh on all gears.
With good Toyo 888 tyres, a new seat fitted in October, fuel cell and harnesses good for 2016, and accompanied by two matching spare RAYS wheels, this well-built, well-maintained race car has recently been shaken down at Curborough and is ready to go for next year’s championships. Few Porsche racing cars arouse spectator interest like this one and the 968 is a joy to drive thanks to its legendary balance.
