The Appeal
The 1998 and 1999 seasons of the German Super Touring Championship marked the dramatic finale of the "Super Touring" era in Germany. It was a time of incredibly high-tech, 2.0-litre naturally aspirated machines that cost nearly as much to develop as Formula 1 cars.
Few machines from that era are as coveted as the Alfa Romeo 156 Superturismo. Developed by Alfa Corse to contest the fiercely competitive German STW Championship, the 156 Super Touring married a sophisticated double-wishbone front suspension layout with a dry-sumped, 300 bhp Twin Spark engine and an X-Trac sequential gearbox, a package that proved devastatingly effective on circuits across Europe.
This is Chassis 09, one of just 12 built by Alfa Corse, and it carries serious provenance. Campaigned by former Formula 1 driver Stefano Modena in the 1998-99 German STW series, it subsequently raced in the Swedish Touring Car Championship before passing through further competitive hands in the Dutch Alfa Romeo Challenge, German TT Championship, and HSCC Super Touring Car Trophy.
The vendor describes the car as being in original in specification, retaining the form in which it left Alfa Corse. We are informed that the car is in complete working order and ready to race, though buyers should note that the seat, harnesses, and fuel tank have expired and will need attention before competition use. Spare parts are available separately.
For collectors and competitors drawn to the Super Touring era, opportunities to acquire a genuine Alfa Corse works car with this level of provenance and documented history are rare.

A mere glance at this storied Alfa Romeo evokes one of the most exciting eras of motorsport the world has ever witnessed. The stance, the livery, the beautifully prepared interior - all fabulous. Considering how much action this car has seen, it shows remarkably few signs of age. It has evidently been very well prepared and cosseted between races.
The Mechanics
- 2.0-litre Twin Spark engine producing 300 bhp at 8,500 rpm with dry sump lubrication
- X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox with front-end engagement
- Engine warm-up system included
- Front-wheel drive with self-locking differential
- Double-wishbone front suspension; McPherson strut rear suspension derived from the Lancia Delta Integrale
- Engine rebuilt by Auto Tecnica
- Gearbox overhauled
- All Magneti Marelli electronics and telemetry overhauled
Alfa's venerable Twin Spark engine is eminently tuneable and can produce some serious performance even in naturally aspirated form. This dry-sumped example reportedly pushes out 300 bhp at a heady 8,500 rpm. That's some serious power. An X-Trac six-speed sequential gearbox guarantees lightning-fast shifts, while front-wheel drive with a self-locking differential means these cars could grip round corners at immense speed. The vendor states the car is in complete working order and ready to race.
