LANCIA DELTA S4 (ABARTH SE 038) – Chassis history

The chassis of the Lancia Delta S4 represents one of the most advanced engineering solutions in Group B rally history. Unlike production‑based Delta models, the S4 utilises a bespoke tubular‑steel space frame rather than a monocoque structure, engineered to maximise torsional rigidity and impact resistance while minimising mass.

This framework is complemented by composite body panels fabricated from carbon fibre and Kevlar, contributing both lightweight construction and enhanced durability.

Chassis KSPORT “MB001”

In the late 2000s, as the FIA evaluated the return of the Lancia 037 to competition under J1 safety regulations, entrepreneur Marco Bianchini (founder of the KSPORT team) submitted his ex‑Team Bora Lancia 037 for FIA approval of the requisite safety upgrades.

Marchesi & C. of Modena—a distinguished chassis manufacturer for Lamborghini and Lancia since the 1970s—executed the work. Based on the FIA‑approved J1 specification for the 037, Bianchini commissioned Marchesi to construct a Lancia Delta S4 chassis to identical safety standards. Key modifications comprised:

• Reinforced roof and engine‑bay cross‑braces
• Redesigned cockpit bulkhead and front partition
• Lightweight chrome‑molybdenum tubular frame

These enhancements satisfy current FIA safety regulations while improving torsional rigidity and handling characteristics. 

The chassis was 'dressed' using an ex‑works S4 from the KSPORT collection as the donor vehicle. Over subsequent years it has competed internationally under various liveries (see attached images), driven by Juha Kankkunen; Markku Alén with Ilkka Kivimäki; Paolo Andreucci; and Marco Bianchini.

The chassis is complete with cockpit panelling, floor, fuel‑tank covers, dashboard with wiring harness, and original (non‑reproduction) doors. 

A comprehensive inventory of original spare parts is available upon request, including suspension components; wheel uprights; steering box; pedal assembly; wheels (gravel and tarmac); driveshafts; glass; lighting; body panels; and IAW40 or IAW60 ECU.
