History
The current owner acquired DBE-15A from Martin Angle in February 2020. According to documentation supplied at that time, DBE-15A was one of four Chevron B16’s built on original chassis purchased in 1981 from the Chevron factory, where they had been held as spares. The original car is understood to have been sent to Belgium with the intention of being used a sprint/hill climb car.
Little is known of its history until 1996, when the car was purchased by Sylvain Stepak, who already owned an FVC-engined Chevron (DBE-15) supported by Tony Thompson Racing in the UK. Thompson was commissioned by Stepak to rebuild DBE-15A as a sister car for DBE-15, but with a BMW engine for longer distance events. In Stepak’s hands and with Jean Claude Andruet as co-driver, DBE-15A won outright at the 12 hours at Jarama; with Gerard Larrousse the 12 hours at Abercete; and again, with Jean Claude Andruet the 24 hours at Magny-Cours. In 1999 and 2001, it retired from the Le Mans 12-hour whilst leading.
John Minshaw acquired DBE-15A in 2002 and with Martin Stretton as his regular partner, achieved 2nd overall in the Jarama 12 hour and 4th overall in the Spa 4 hour in 2002. In 2003, again with Stretton, Minshaw came 2nd overall at Nurburgring and 1st in the Charade 6-hour. In 2007, DBE-15A underwent a complete rebuild, including fitting a brand-new Geoff Richardson FVC engine and BPA gearbox rebuild.
In 2010, DBE-15A was sold to Martin Angle who, with his son Hugh, regularly raced the car and achieved class podiums in the Masters Historic Sports Car series including the Silverstone Classic and Brands Hatch GP circuit.
