History:
Cooper had won the formula one world championship in 1960 with the “low line” T53. Many racing customers had purchased the successful T53 to race in a variety of series. This car here is one of the two Cooper T53 raced in 1961-63 by the Italian Scuderia Centro Sud Team in the Intercontinental and Tasman series with drivers, Lorenzo Bandini and Carlo Abate. Historic photos show Bandini in the New Zealand Tasman series race at Teratonga in 1962 and Abate at the Italian Imola Circuit in 1963. All of the Centro Sud cars are accounted for. Documents include correspondence between research expert Allen Brown and Historian Doug Nye, which discuss the car’s provenance in detail.
Restoration:
Originally restored by famous ex Rob Walker Mechanic ALF Francis. More recently completely rebuilt by Tom Ellis of Thomas Vintage Motors in Boulder, Colorado. Continuous race preparation with good records. Engine rebuild by David Vegher of Veloce Motors. Engine has only two race weekends since the new rebuild. It has a fresh gear box with only 30 minutes of testing. Recent race prep right before putting the car up for sale.
Of Note:
A rare opportunity to acquire a proper Cooper T53 Grand Prix Car. Eligible for prestigious historic events, including the Monaco Grand Prix Historic and the Goodwood Revival. Comes with a large file of documents, authenticating the ownership, provenance, originality and the restoration.
