Description:

We have the pleasure to offer this interesting Spice SE88 C/L 002 for sale.

Spice was a very successful race car constructor of C2 cars for the World Sportscar Championship, during the late 80's and early 90's.

Formed in 1986 by successful BRDC members and sportscar drivers, Gordon Spice and Ray Bellm, they produced over 30 cars for the World Sports Car Championship in both C2 and latterly C1 classes as well as IMSA in the USA. Their major successes came in C2 where they were World Champions in 1985, 1987 and 1988 as well as class winners at Le Mans in '85, '87 and '88 and winners of Daytona in '87.

This particular car, chassis 88- 002, was originally built for IMSA racing in the USA where it took part between 1988 and 1991 (see History below). It is equipped with a Buick 4.5 Litre V6 engine and a Hewland DGB gearbox.

The engine, last rebuild by Todd Hurtle and confirmed to give in excess of 500bhp with solid reliability, has just 4 hours running on it. Belts are valid until end of 2018 and the fuel cell till 2020.

Since its last test outings in 2014, the car would benefit from a suspension crack check, general go-through and an engine check over, the total of which should not exceed a conservative GBP 20k.

002 is located in UK where an inspection is welcomed and comes with two sets of spare wheels and a spare engine which needs rebuilding.

This gorgeous C2 class Spice is a perfect entry for the Group C championship race series at a reasonable entry level price and reasonably straightforward to both drive and run.

History:

In 1988 002 did Daytona, Sebring, Road Atlanta, West Palm, Lime Rock, Mid Ohio and Columbus, qualifying on class pole twice with Schubot & Ludeman driving.

In 1989 it did Daytona, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Mid Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road America and Del-mar achieving three class wins driven by Schubot & Ludeman.

In 1990 it did Topeka where it won the class, Lime Rock and Mid Ohio with Schubot & Ludeman then Road Amercia and Tampa with Ken Knott & Jim Pace. In those three very successful years, 002 was always run by S&L Racing.

In 1991 it was run by Bobeda Racing and driven by Carlos Bobeda and Andy Evans. It did Road Atlanta, Topeka and Mid Ohio before being involved in a truck fire.

002 was subsequently partially converted to an open top car but never raced in this configuration. It was then bought by a Scandinavian and the car was fully rebuild and put back to closed top specification by Damax UK which included chassis work and sourcing a body

from America. It was finished in early 2009. The rebuild included rebuilt chassis, rebuilt gearbox, rebuilt uprights, new wishbones, new dampers, new wiring, new fuel system, rebuilt brake system and finally a complete re-paint.

The car won its class at the Le Mans 24hr support race in 2010 and also raced at Spa and Brands Hatch. In 2011 it raced at Silverstone Classic – class 4th (Race 1) and class 3rd (Race 2), and Brands Hatch Q3rd. 002 did one race at Donington in 2012.

In 2013/14 the car only did a few tests.
