The M8E is an interesting part of the Mclaren Can Am story. It was originally intended to be the customer version of the M8D factory car which dominated the 1970 Can Am Championship. However with the factory's subsequent attention then fully given to the development of the M8F for 1971,the E was put aside. Only when the F development had been completed was the E finalised and released to Trojan Cars ,Croydon who manufactured all McLaren customer cars.It is also believed that during the development of the F, Denny Hulme had questioned the size and aerodynamics with the bulky body and full length fences. and the E was designed in response to his suggestion.
Chassis, 80 -06 was ordered from the factory by Fred Parkhill of Tulsa, Oklahoma and delivered in May 1971. A chevrolet Big Block of 7 litres was fitted and the car was raced by him in the Can Am event at Donnybrooke in September 1971.Parkhill continued to race the car until late 1978.The car then passed via two non racing owners to Andrew Marler in England. Marler raced it for two years in the HSCC Atlantic Computers Championship in England and Europe. In 1989 Marler sold the car to a swiss collector.
The car was purcahsed in 2007 by the last owner and was prepared and run by Racing Fabrications. In 2008 the engine was replaced by 532 cu,in (8712cc) all alloy Chevrolet Big Block built by RM Motorsports.,Detroit,American racing engine specialists. As part of the comprehensive overhaul by Racing Fabrications an Agg heavy duty "Super -Hewland transaxle was fitted to handle the greatly increased power and torque.
The car has limited racing since then and is surely a unique opportunity for any serious collector or racer.
There is a package of original spares including the original bodywork .
