Gilbern GT
Description:
Due to ill-health, I’m very reluctantly having to sell my race cars.
This listing is for my white Gilbern GT. I own two Gilberns, this one was my lock-down project having purchased the car as a body-off rolling chassis I set about a full restoration to create a circuit car with HTP.
I believe that there are only three Gilbern GT’s with valid HTP’s, my GT has been regularly campaigned over the last five years’. The car is on the Goodwood database and the HTP, Class GTS11, is valid until December 2031.
The chassis was strengthened by Gilbern specialist, Philip Ivimey, a bespoke cage was added and the combined assembly was powder coated matt-black. The body was reattached by a company local to me, Fibreglass Applications, their team included ex-Marcos technicians, they did an excellent job. I have a period picture of the car, white with up and over red stripes, I recreated this. I collected the car from the paint-shop the day before lock-down was announced.
The wiring loom was professionally fitted, the original dashboard having been retained, I fitted a new Tillett seat, a 40 litre race tank and other essentials.
Peter Burgess provided the B Series engine which is mated to a four-synchro box. Included with the sale is a second race engine and three-synchro box. The car has a LSD, fitted by Heathrow Transmissions.
The Gilbern is MGB based and under the GRP body it shares many components including front suspension, brakes and of course engine and box. The key difference is at the rear where the Gilbern uses trailing arms and Panhard rod, as against leaf-springs on the MGB and as a consequence, unlike the MGB, the Gilbern mostly keeps four wheels on the tarmac.
There are many race series for this car including Equipe and HRDC. The car is road legal with V5, I have only driven it on the road once, to/from a GOC concours event, which was a condition of entry, it is very stiff and I was very grateful for my ear defenders!
There a dozens of racing MGB’s, but only two of three regularly competing Gilbern GT’s. My GT runs about mid-pack within the gaggle of MGB’s, but unlike a B it attracts huge interest and as a consequence increases the likelihood of invitation to prestigious events.
In addition to the spare engine & box, there are four spare wheels and various other parts included in this sale. There is a decent history file and pictures of the restoration in progress. Gilburn produced 202 GT’s, there is an excellent Gilbern Owners Club and the club believes that 137 GT’s survive.
You will find numerous images of this car on-line, search Lamplough Gilbern, and there are several in-car videos on youtube.
