Description:
Built in 1948 by well known engineer C.F. Smith, bodied at the Cooper works. Originally designed as both a Vee twin and a 500 sigle engined car. Very well documented in period with lots of photos and articles in Motorsport, Iota, Bolster Specials, 500 Racing, to name but a few. Very advanced design including tubular chassis, de dion rear suspension and a limited slip differential.
1948. Raced by Charlie Smith in V twin format 19th Grand Prix Des Frontieres Formula B finished 5th, Silverstone and Dunholme Lodge in Formula 3 form.
1949. Two more race meetings at Silverstone
1950. Dickie Stoop, raced at Brough, Silverstone and finally finished 4th at the Goodwood International Trophy Meeting.
The CFS is currently race ready fitted with its works modified Jap 8/80 Vee Twin, rebuilt by Cameron Engineering, complete with starter motor to negate push starting.
The chassis, suspension, gearbox, brakes, professionally rebuilt by Simon Frost
The CFS is eligible for a host of racing either in Vee twin form as a Formula 2 car or as an invited Formula Junior. Alternatively as a 500 formula 3. The CFS would also be a very quick and eligible hill climb car.
Another interesting piece of history is that Dick Stoop who drove the car at Goodwood in 1950, had also been a wartime Spitfire pilot at Goodwood and had a reputation of racing fellow pilot Tony Gaze around the perimeter track in their MG Midgets!
