Freshly restored narrow tunnel MGB in race-ready specification, built on a US export shell and ideal for CSCC or Equipe 70’s competition.
DESCRIPTION
Background:
The MGB is one of the most iconic British sports cars, with over half a million produced between 1962 and 1980. Offering a winning combination of affordability, practicality and classic driving enjoyment, the MGB remains a popular choice for both road and race use. With full parts support and active club backing, these cars are widely used in historic competition, ranging from accessible entry-level events to high-profile international series.
The Car:
Originally built as a left-hand drive export model, this MGB was finished in Iris Blue with a blue interior and appears to have spent most of its life in the United States. It returned to the UK in February 2020 and has since undergone a comprehensive restoration and rebuild to full competition specification.
The shell is understood to be an early narrow tunnel body, stripped back to bare metal and refinished in dark green with an Old English White hardtop. The car is now right-hand drive and presents in excellent cosmetic condition.
Though the file does not include detailed invoices, we are informed the mechanical specification is as follows: a rebuilt five-bearing ‘18V’ engine bored to 1950cc (83.5mm), close-ratio gearbox, 4.1 axle ratio with limited slip differential, competition suspension with uprated springs, dampers and hard bushes, full new braking system with transparent cylinders, points ignition, new wiring loom with all new electrical components, and Minator wheels with Dunlop Racing tyres.
The car is running and driving following its restoration but has not yet been set up or rolling road tuned. The engine has been freshly built and is currently filled with Millers running-in oil.
As with all competition cars, buyers should satisfy themselves as to the currency and compliance of the safety equipment fitted. We are aware of the following items requiring attention:
- The seat, harnesses and fire extinguisher are all out of date.
- The roll cage currently lacks door bars.
- A 20-litre unbaffled fuel tank is fitted.
- No FIA HTP papers are present due to the enlarged engine capacity.
With its current specification, the car would be eligible for events such as the CSCC Swinging 60’s and Equipe 70’s. If an 1800cc engine were to be fitted, this pre-1966 shell would be eligible for FIA papers and could then participate in series such as the Motor Racing Legends ‘Generations Trophy’.
With two FIA cars already consigned for the forthcoming Race Retro auction, this example offers an affordable and freshly restored gateway into one of the most competitive and enjoyable historic racing classes. Once correctly set up, it has the potential to be a competitive and attractive entry in its current form, or a strong basis for FIA homologation.
