The AC Cobra 289 history.

Commissioned in 2010 for Jackie Cochrane of Northern Ireland, the Cobra was constructed by Lech Kowalski of Kirkham Cars, with the chassis and aluminium body produced by Kirkham.

Ford 289 4.7 ltr engine initially built by Steve Warrior and subsequently completely overhauled by Woodham Mortimer in 20218.

The car was purchased in 2014 by renowned classic racing driver John Young and built to full FIA specification. Mr Young competed in the 2015 Goodwood Members’ Meeting, securing a 6th-place finish with a best lap time of 1:26.9 (the fastest lap of the race being 1:26.6).

In 2018, the Cobra was acquired by J.D. Classics (Woodham Mortimer) and underwent a comprehensive rebuild. It was sold by Woodham Mortimer in 2019 and is understood to have found a home in Germany. In 2023, the car was offered for sale and inspected by Britec Motorsports on behalf for the present owner, who reported it to be “in excellent condition”. During their care, they completed photographic documentation, an engine power run, and an oil change.

The current owner subsequently entrusted the Cobra to us at Redline Engineering UK for an in-depth inspection. We provided detailed feedback, proposed updates, a highly competitive vehicle weight of just 990kg (with fuel).

In July 2024, Redline completed a series of mechanical improvements, including a new gearbox, Tilton hydraulic release clutch, new harnesses, fabricated radiator ducting panels, and a full spanner check over. It was then agreed that the car would be sent to Cobra racing legend Gary Spencer of Classic Racing Cars (CRC), where it received extensive upgrades, including new front and rear racing anti-roll bars, new brake and clutch master cylinders, a rolling-road check and bias valve, STACK rev counter, mechanical revisions, a full overhaul of the front and rear suspension with new racing hubs and discs, a cooling-system overhaul, corner-weight measurements, bump and rebound damper setup, complete geometry setup, bump-steer check, and a new Tillett racing seat.

Following this preparation, CRC delivered the Cobra to Donington Park for testing by both the owner and Redline’s Neil Fisher who achieved a respectable best time of 1:21.3 in just six laps. The car ran faultlessly throughout the entire test day.

Most recently, in 2024, the Cobra returned to Gary Spencer (CRC) for fresh HTP papers (valid to December 2035), a roll-cage upgrade, a new bladder fuel tank, and a pre-race spanner check over. At Oulton Park, it achieved 6th overall and 1st in class.

To date, this AC Cobra has been maintained without regard to cost and prepared to the highest standards, the condition speaks for its-self and has been thoroughly enjoyed racing the EQUIPE grid, where it consistently achieved top-ten finishes.

Having proven its competitiveness at Goodwood and throughout the Equipe Racing series, this Cobra stands as an exceptional example prepared by the UK’s leading historic racing specialists.
