TVR Grantura MkIII FIA
Description:
TVR Grantura MkIII Chassis 9/664
TVR vastly improved the Grantura chassis and suspension over the VW suspension based earlier models with the introduction of the MkIII, introducing a new tubular chassis design with independent front and rear suspension by unequal length wishbones and coil over dampers, rack and pinion steering and a mixture of Triumph, Austin Healey and MG derived brakes, hubs, engines and drivetrain. Initially the MkIII Grantura was fitted with the MGA derived 1600cc BMC B series engine, TVR records show that this car, Chassis 9/664 was the first of the production series to be fitted with the 1800cc B series engine as fitted to the newly launched MGB, all previous chassis numbers in the sequence being prefixed with 8 indicating the 1600cc engine.
Records show that Chassis 9/664 was built by the factory in September of 1963 but it was not registered until 1965. An advert in the Feb 26 1965 edition of Autosport for an unregistered MkIII Grantura in white as this car was originally, states that the owner was abroad, unable to take delivery, bargain at £800. This appears to indicate the sale as an unregistered vehicle and correspondence (included) alludes to it possibly having been originally bought by a French gentleman and never registered or exported. Within the documents accompanying this car are records from the first registered keeper’s ownership including a photograph of the car in the Italian Alps in the sixties and correspondence with the TVR archivist.
The current owner purchased the car in 2008 and carried out a complete re-build to FIA Appendix K specification, papers being issued and the car commencing its competition career in 2010. The car appears in the Peter Philby book TVR The Early Years published in 2010.
This well known car has competed successfully ever since with a huge number of class podiums, overall Classic K series winner with the Classic Sports Car Club in 2019, an overall win at Silverstone in the Signtech Trophy with Ecurie GTS, second in GT category in the Autosport HSCC 3 Hrs at Snetterton, several podiums at Spa Summer Classic and placed well in two Spa 3 hour races plus numerous series class wins with the CSCC and seen on MotorsTV whilst competing at the Chateau Impney hillclimb.
Eligible for Goodwood, Le Mans Classic, Spa 6 hours and 3 hours races, Angouleme Circuit Des Remparts, Pau, Masters Gentleman Drivers, GT&SCC, HSCC, Equipe, CSCC and many other racing and hill climb opportunities.
The car comes complete with new FIA Appendix K papers acquired 09/06/2025 and valid until 31/12/2035.
