1970 Jaguar E-Type 2+2 Series 2
Description:
1970 Jaguar E-Type Series 2 2+2 – ‘Special Equipment’
Besley Heritage Ltd are delighted to present a thoughtfully developed example of Jaguar’s Series 2 E-Type 2+2 Coupe, finished in its original specification of Sable with a Cinnamon interior. Built in June 1970 and first delivered by Henlys of London, this UK-market, matching-numbers example retains its original colour combination and is supported by a Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate. Just 1,040 right-hand drive Series 2 2+2 Coupés were built for the home market between 1969 and 1971. Fewer than 130 remain registered with the DVLA today, making this a rare opportunity to acquire one of Jaguar’s final straight-six E-Types in home-market specification.
Since 2018, the car has been under the ownership of an experienced E-Type enthusiast and regular participant in international historic rally events. The intention was to produce a reliable, usable and sympathetically uprated grand touring E-Type — retaining originality where important, but improving performance, comfort and drivability where sensible. Over £60,000 has been spent restoring the car with a number of well-known marque specialists including CKL of Battle, Suffolk Sports Cars, CL Classics and Riedling & Mouser. Please see the photo gallery for further photos of the restoration process.
Mechanically, the car has been significantly improved. It benefits from electronic ignition, a pre-engaged starter motor, uprated cooling and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Most notably, a Laycock de Normanville overdrive unit has been fitted, allowing for longer-legged cruising — at 85 mph the engine turns over at a relaxed 2,500 rpm. This modification, only feasible on the longer-wheelbase 2+2 chassis, transforms the car’s usability without altering its character.
Further upgrades include ITG sports air intake, rejetted SU carburettors, ceramic-coated manifolds, new suspension and steering bushes, solid-mounted steering rack and Boge shock absorbers. The cylinder head has been skimmed and fitted with an uprated gasket, while the gearbox and differential have also been rebuilt. Structurally, the car has been extensively restored with new sills and floors, addressing all corrosion concerns.
The interior has been partially retrimmed to a high standard, and the bonnet resprayed recently. A Webasto sunroof and discreet Dynamat insulation complete the package, improving cabin comfort on long-distance touring events.
This E-Type is accompanied by a comprehensive history file, including invoices and a current FIVA passport. It has completed a number of significant regularity events including the Targa Florio Classica, Modena Cento Ore, and Gran Premio Nuvolari without issue — testament to its level of preparation and reliability.
A rare, corrosion free, and intelligently uprated example of the Series 2 2+2 — well suited to fast road use, rallies or long-distance touring.
