Offered for sale is one of the most characterful and well-travelled TR4As you’re likely to come across – affectionately known as “Lucy”. This beautifully presented 1967 Triumph TR4A has been in the care of its current owner for over 40 years, and in that time has benefitted from a life of ongoing maintenance, thoughtful upgrades, and some truly unforgettable motoring adventures across Europe.

First acquired in 1983, Lucy was brought back to life from non-running condition and gradually returned to the road, initially as a daily driver for the owner’s late wife – who gave the car its name. In 1991, Lucy underwent a significant restoration that included new body panels (from TRGB), quality paintwork by Hughes Lone Pine Garage, and a beautifully retrimmed interior in Connolly leather and Boyriven carpeting, completed by an Aston Martin trimmer based at Newport Pagnell.

Mechanically, the car has been extensively improved by Chestnut House Sports Cars, specialists in Triumph rally preparation. The engine received a full rebuild including:

• Gas-flowed and ported cylinder head

• +0.020" pistons and bored liners

• Composite head gasket and hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel

• High torque starter motor

• Alternator conversion

• Stainless steel exhaust system

• Output: a healthy 105 bhp on rolling road testing

Handling and ride quality have also been significantly enhanced with:

• Lowered road springs

• Spax adjustable shock absorbers all round (telescopic conversion at rear)

• Urethane suspension bushes

• 5.5J wire wheels (upgraded from original 4.5J)

Lucy’s story is as compelling as her spec sheet. She has travelled extensively throughout Europe – over Alpine passes including the Furka, Susten, Gotthard, Simplon, Raticossa, Stelvio and more. In 2001, the owner and his late wife drove Lucy from the UK to Marmaris Bay in Turkey, following the old Mille Miglia route and covering thousands of miles across Italy, Greece and back – via snow-covered Swiss and French passes in winter.

In more recent years, Lucy has been a regular entrant on classic rallies and tours, including:

• 2015 Grand Tour Cape to Cape – co-driven by Willie Cave, ex-Triumph works co-driver

• 2017 Cape to Cape Spain – with the owner’s daughter navigating

• Le Mans 24H (2016) and Le Mans Classic (2018)

• Caux Retro Tours (2019 & 2022)

• Numerous UK-based classic events in the Cotswolds, Mendips, Chilterns, and more
