At the end of the 2004 Formula 1 season, Ford decided to withdraw from F1 and sold the Jaguar Racing team to Red Bull. This led to the formation of Red Bull Racing for the 2005 season.

The first car they used, the Red Bull RB1, was essentially an evolution of the Jaguar R6, which had been in development for the 2005 season before the sale. The chassis and design were largely carried over, with some modifications under Red Bull's new ownership. The team, however, brought a fresh and more energetic approach to F1, led by Christian Horner, who became the youngest team principal at the time.
