Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro
Description:
The Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro
The long and challenging history of the Valkyrie's development includes a major chapter in motorsport. This not only refers to Adrian Newey as the most successful Formula 1 designer of all time and the mastermind behind the Valkyrie, but also Aston Martin's ambition to go down in the history books with an overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as McLaren did in 1995 with the F1 GTR. This plan was shared with the public for the first time in Geneva in 2019 as the Valkyrie AMR Pro Concept. To achieve this goal, the already extreme road version of the Valkyrie was used as the basic concept and optimised so much for racing that every component of the finished AMR Pro was developed in-house, with the exception of the front headlights and the V12 engine.
For example, the wheelbase is 38 cm longer and the maximum downforce has increased to 2,000 kg, while the vehicle weight has dropped to 1,000 kg. The weight saving is mainly due to the fact that the road-going version no longer has an HV hybrid system, which means that although the AMR Pro ‘only’ has 1,015 hp, it now has a sensational power-to-weight ratio of 0.99 kg per hp. This means that the AMR Pro is 0.19 kg per hp better than the road version of the Valkyrie. To protect the clutch, the vehicle starts up electrically powered by a 48V battery. The combustion engine is then started by a ‘bump start’ while the vehicle is driving at 15 kph. Due to management changes within Aston Martin and the entry into Formula 1, the Le Mans project was paused for a few years, during which only 40 Valkyrie AMR Pro cars were built for private customers.
Following the great popularity of endurance races in 2023 and 2024, the British manufacturer decided to tackle the Le Mans project again and announced the use of two Valkyrie AMR LMH racing cars each in the WEC and IMSA from 2025. The AMR LMH is to be seen as a slightly changed AMR Pro, which was necessary to meet the regulations of the racing series.
At first glance, the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro may appear to be just another version of a road car modified for the racetrack and to be categorised alongside vehicles such as the Ferrari FXX K or McLaren Senna GTR. However, this is a misconception. It is a pure Le Mans prototype and can only be compared with the Ferrari 499P Modificata, the customer version of the two-time Le Mans winner 499P LMH from Maranello, which does not have a corresponding road version.
