Description:
1972 BRABHAM DOLPHIN BT36
Motorsport Australia C of D # Q.012.02.01
Log Book H1354
Historic Group Q
Built in 1972 using a Brabham chassis imported from Arch Motors by Don Baker. All Brabham components, magnesium uprights, Girling brakes, pedals, suspension components.
Two other cars were built by Don with accurate replica chassis’ and were known as Brabhams or Dolphins. CAMS log booked this car as a Brabham Dolphin BT36, although it does not have a factory number plate. Probably has more Brabham components that a lot of so called ‘genuine’ Brabhams.
On seeing the car once, Ron Turanac commented that it certainly looked like one of his chassis’.
The other two cars’ owners included F2 drivers, Chris Farrell and Tony Stewart.
The car was raced in Formula 2 by a couple of drivers including Max Stewart, Andrew Miedecke. Andrew drove the car in the 1976 Australian GP at Sandown under Grace Brothers Racing.
Although qualifying 11th in a field of mainly F5000’S, Andrew was forced to start from the rear of the grid, for ‘safety’ concerns at the start.
Andrew finished the race in 5th place, albeit a couple of laps behind winner, John Goss in a F5000.
The car changed hands a couple of times, Ken Shirvington drove it and it also went to New Zealand to compete in the Stuyvesant Series, driven by Peter Larner.
The car was sold again and then ‘disappeared’ for many years before it was tracked down and found by Brabham guru, Bryan Millar in 1993. It was in many pieces, Bryan had the car re-built and then raced it in Historic Events until selling it to well know Historic car collector and racer, Dick Willis.
Mark, the current owner, has owned the car since 2007 and after rebuilding it, entered in numerous historic events.
