The Racing Point F1 Team, formerly known as the Racing Point Force India F1 Team, was a Formula 1 team that participated in the Formula 1 World Championship from 2018. The team’s headquarters were located in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom.
On July 28, 2018, the Force India team was placed under administration following a lawsuit filed by their driver, Sergio Pérez. The aim was to devise a plan to allow the struggling team, which had been facing financial difficulties for years, to continue racing. On August 7, the team was taken over by a consortium of businessmen named “Racing Point UK Limited,” led by Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll.
For the next race in Belgium, the team changed its name to “Racing Point Force India F1 Team.” The team couldn’t retain the old name as only the assets of Force India were acquired rather than the team itself. Consequently, the team had to reapply to participate in the Formula 1 World Championship under a new name, hence the addition of the words “Racing Point” to the existing team name. The former Force India team was excluded from the championship as they couldn’t complete the season, and the new team Racing Point Force India couldn’t retain the points of the old team. Points scored from this race onwards counted towards the Constructors’ Championship. However, drivers Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon were allowed to keep all their points in the Drivers’ Championship. Racing Point Force India participated in the final nine races of the 2018 Formula 1 season, achieving their best result in the first race in Belgium with Pérez finishing fifth and Ocon finishing sixth. They ultimately finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship with 52 points.
On December 1, 2018, it was announced that in 2019, the name “Force India” would be dropped from the team’s name. It would solely continue under the name Racing Point F1 Team. A day earlier, it was already announced that Esteban Ocon would be replaced by Lance Stroll in 2019, Lawrence’s son, who previously drove for the Williams team.
