Description:
In 2006, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, suffered a blow when long-standing contestant Opel withdrew from the series. That left Audi and Mercedes-Benz to fill the field of 20 entrants and to decide which car is the best, Audi’s A4 or Mercedes’ C-Class. After an exciting season, German Bernd Schneider would take the title – his fourth and final one – at the wheel of his Vodafone-sponsored Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
This C-Class is a show model of the exact car that Schneider drove in 2006. It was produced by HWA – founded by Hans-Werner Aufrecht, the man responsible for the birth of AMG – for sponsors who wanted to showcase their involvement in the most exciting touring car series of the era and it is adorned by the striking red livery of Vodafone. Although in racing this Mercedes was powered by a formidable four-litre V8 engine that produced close to 500 horsepower, this showcar comes without the engine. It does however feature a correct monocoque on which the familiar body of the W203 C-Class was built.
A legend in his own right, Bernd Schneider faced fierce competition in his hunt for the 2006 title. Among others, he had to fight Formula One stars of the past like Jean Alesi, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and multiple world champion Mika Häkkinen. Also 9-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen was part of the 2006 DTM grid. However iconic these drivers were, they were no match for the man that could be considered the King of DTM from this era. Schneider, who also raced for the Zakspeed and Arrows teams in Formula One, albeit without ever scoring a point in his 34 entries, beat them all. This machine represents an epic season of a legendary racing series, and is a unique piece for any admirer of racing, or of Mercedes-Benz motorcars.
