1970 Chevrolet Camaro Gp1 race car FIA HTP

Description:

Regular Group 1 podium car at Goodwood. Fastest lap at this years Goodwood 81MM Gordon Spice Trophy (1.26.744) and 3rd in the prestigeous two driver 45 minute race.

Richard Lloyd, British racing driver and team owner was as famous for his touring car success as he was for his success in sports cars where his team’s Porsche 956 came second at 1985 Le Mans driven by Jonathan Palmer and James Weaver. He ultimately ran Apex Motorsport, the team behind Bentley’s return to Le Mans in 2001 and eventual famous victory in 2003.

In 1973 Richard Lloyd made a debut in the European Touring Car championship in the Spa 24 Hours in the AG Rivers Racing Chevrolet Camaro Z28 sharing the driving with young F1 rookie James Hunt.

In the same year he was entered in a Group 1 Camaro in the first Avon Tour of Britain with Robert Fearnell. Due to an accident Richard had to step down so he and his sponsor, Alan Rivers, contacted James Hunt and again asked him to step into the Camaro. Hunt, who later in 1976 famously won the F1 World Championship, won the event outright in the striking 1970 white and black Camaro.

Fast forward to 2006 and to celebrate that epic victory, Richard Lloyd and Alan Rivers bought an identical 5.7 litre Camaro from the US and prepped the car for the newly established Tour Britannia.

“It is an attempt to turn the clock back more than 30 years and visit the days when the car was current; it will be rebuilt in a period way” said Richard Lloyd at the time “The Camaro won that first event back in 1973 and we thought it would be fun to compete in Tour Britannia, being that it mirrors the original event.”

Following his untimely death in a plane accident in 2008 the car was sold to Stuart Scott and Stuart entered the 2009 Tour Britannia coming 5th in class but the following years saw class wins in 2010,11 and 12. The 2013 event was the 40th anniversary of James Hunts stunning victory but sadly a fairy tale victory was not on the cards. However, following Peter Knight refreshing the engine and making sure the full 475BHP was available and thorough prepping by then BTCC now leading historic preparers, Jordan Racing Team, the car was ready for the one day Mini Britannia in October where the car excelled to take the top step.

The car was then sold to the current owner, long term successful historic preparer and racer John Young. With the recent surge in interest in Group 1 racing the car has been actively campaigned and regularly appears on the podium.

Recent result highlights include:

2022 Goodwood MM Gerry Marshall Trophy 3rd Young/Sheddon

2023 Silverstone GP HRDC Gerry Marshall Trophy 2nd Young/Young

2024 Goodwood MM Gordon Spice Trophy 3rd Young/Sheddon (fastest lap 1.26744)

2024 Donington Historic HRDC Gerry Marshall Trophy 1st Young/Young

The car is a proven winning car, eligible for all Group 1 events including Goodwood Members Meeting, Peter Auto, Motor Racing Legends, HRDC as well as Tour Auto and Modena Cento Ore. The car comes with FIA HTP and is race ready following its recent victory at Donington Historic Festival. The car is road registered.
