Lotus 61 Formula Ford. Built in 1969, this is a real Lotus race car on a Ford Focus budget. A Lotus 61 will provide an entry into historic racing, or hillclimbs and sprints, and… it’s a Lotus. This is chassis no 61/FF/51 which was sold to its first owner in San Francisco as a new car in 1969 and as far as I can establish, retains its original Hewland Mk5 gearbox. That makes it numbers matching, or as much as any real race car can be. It has extensive period race history in the US before it was imported to the UK in 2014. The car was fully rebuilt by specialist Dan Eagling a couple of years ago, when the gearbox was also rebuilt and both have done one event. The engine was rebuilt by Scholar Race Engines and that too has done one event since a full rebuild. There is a spare nosecone (a bit battered but repairable), a complete set of spare wheels with unused Avon tyres, a recently serviced Lifeline fire extinguisher, another set of usable tyres, spare shock absorbers and other sundries. Formula Ford is where Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell and dozens of Motor Sport’s biggest ever stars began their careers and there is still no purer form of properly competitive motorsport.
