Description:
OldRacingCars.com reports the history for Brabham BT29-35 as the Fred Opert/Bonfil Team entry for Allan Lader. Lader raced the car in the 1970 U.S./Canadian Formula B Continental Championship Series.
Lader began the 1970 SCCA Continental Championship Series in his 1969 Brabham BT29, chassis number BT29-9. However, starting at Road America in July, he upgraded to the newer 1970 BT29, chassis number BT29-35. Lader went on to finish on the podium at that first race.
Lader and BT29-35 finished 2nd at Mt. Tremblant, and followed that up with a victory at Brainerd. They finished 3rd behind Fred Opert Racing/Bonfil teammate Mike Eyerly at Road America, and took 2nd at Lime Rock. At Mosport Lader would again take the outright win.
Lader and BT29-35 finished 2nd to Eyerly at Mid-Ohio. They would finish the season at Sebring on the podium with a 3rd place thereby securing 2nd in the overall Continental Championship.
In 1971 Lader left the Opert/Bonfil team and struck out on his own with another Brabham BT29. That car was chassis BT29-46. He would race that chassis up through the Mexico City race when he crashed that BT29. Thereafter Lader continued through the rest of the season with a new Brabham BT35, and narrowly won the Championship over Bert Hawthorne in his Tui.
Fast forward to 2008. In August of 2008, Bobby Rahal purchased BT29-35 from David Romaine. It was at that time that Rahal helped fill in the blanks of the car’s early history after its successful 1970 Formula Continental season. According to Rahal, BT29-35 was restored by Allan Lader then it went to Tony Senniger, then to David Romaine, and then to Rahal. See TenTenths.com discussion.
Since then all owners are known and documented in the car’s current log book.
Most recently the Brabham has been maintained in a private collection by a professional race car mechanic.
The Brabham is powered by a Jennings 1600 c.c. Lotus twin cam. It has a Hewland FT200 gearbox, polished nickel plated suspension, a Smiths tach. and Momo steering wheel.
Needs: New seat belts, fluid change, and general going over for a car that has been on display the past several years.
Spares include an additional cockpit surround (body) and a spare set of wheels.
This car is a great front running entry for the historic Continental Grand Prix Reunion Series in the U.S. or in the HSCC Historic Formula 2 Championship in the Jim Clark Trophy category. The car is as nice as the photos show. It just needs a going over to freshen it to run at the front again.
The owner has retired from the sport. The BT29 will be sold. All offers are welcome and will be considered. Someone is going to get the car.
