Description:
Caterham Blackbird / Hayabusa Rolling Chassis
I have taken the decision to offer for sale my genuine Caterham Blackbird, main details and key points are as follows :
· 1999 Caterham Blackbird, genuine original car as built by Doug Newmans Four Wheel Motorcycle Company / Blackbird Motorsport.
· This was the second car built for his good friend Michael Jones.
· Fully road registered with V5C in my name. Sorned for many years as it has been used only as a race car by myself.
· It was one of the cars that completed in the 24 hour Nurburgring races – TWICE ! in the hands of Michael Jones as part of the Blackbird Motorsport Team. I even have a genuine Blackbird Motorsport polo-shirt and commemorative shield that Doug Newman very kindly gave me.
· Quite early in her life the car was converted to Hayabusa power, a 1500cc engine and was raced by Michael Jones in various UK series.
· In approximately 2011 the car was fitted with a 1300cc Hayabusa engine and was sold to a gentleman in Germany who not only collected it from the UK and drove it back to Germany but then used the car to go to his local golf club !!
· In 2013, I bought the car and went to Germany to collect it - but not being as hardy as that gentleman, I brought it back to the UK on a trailer !
· I sold my Caterham CSR that I had at the time and raced the Blackbird with the 1300cc Hayabusa engine with the Magnificent 7’s of the CSCC in 2014 and 2015, winning 5 races outright of the then Group 1 grid.
· For 2016 the engine was upgraded to a Gen 2 1440cc RLM Racing engine and again raced in 3 or 4 Mag 7 races.
· For 2017 / 18 the engine was further upgraded to full race 1440 spec by RLM Racing with CNC head and bigger cams etc etc.
· In 2018 and 2019 the car was treated to a full comprehensive overhaul.
· Car was completely stripped down to a bare chassis and sent back to Arch Motors. They removed all of the aluminium panels, checked the chassis for true alignment on the original jig, refurbished the bare chassis, strengthening via triangulation the diff mounting cradle, modifying the nearside engine bay bracing to clear a Hayabusa oil filter better, and then fitted brand new aluminium panels to the chassis.

· I do have new unused Kumho V70a tyres in Medium, Soft and Supersoft compounds available if required.
· I also have available everything need to make the car road legal, headlights – in black, rear lights, fog, reverse and indicators with carbon backs, handbrake cables and sierra calipers, horn, switches etc etc
Plus a load of other spares such as driveshafts, Dedion tube, A frame, sets of wishbones - both aero and standard, standard front wings, RaceCo Titanium exhaust silencers, Hayabusa headers and loads of stuff I have currently forgotten about (!!) on the shelves from owning Caterhams for nearly 15 years !!! this includes some of the original Blackbird parts.
I am offering the car as a rolling chassis - which as you can see is basically a brand new imperial chassis car.
It needs an engine. Loom and ECU, this could be Blackbird to return her to original form, Hayabusa, as fitted most recently or indeed a car engine if preferred.
I do have the full race, stage 2/3 1440 cc RLM Racing engine, full spec with CNC head and angled throttle bodies, choice of wet or dry sump which has done approximately 4 hours running time since build – which I might be persuaded to sell with the car if wanted.
The reason for selling is that I have purchased an MK RLM / Atomic Racing Cup 200 car (well two of them actually !) and so the Caterham is not going to get used by myself and it is time for her to begin the next chapter of her life !
As you can see there are lots of options and configurations so the best bet is to call me for a chat and we can talk through what option / configuration from rolling chassis through to full spec Hayabusa race car suits your needs and budget.
To give an idea for starters, then the complete rolling chassis including the Ohlin dampers and all running gear and body panels, cage, coolant, fuel and oil systems as listed etc etc- so just needing an engine, loom and ECU is going to be ~£18K
If desired as above but with the full race 1440 Hayabusa engine, throttle bodies, dry sump etc then its going to be ~£30K
If I remove the riduluously expesnive but fantastic 3 way Ohlins and replace with some Caterham Bilsteins I have on the shelf (came on the car when I bought it originally), also remove the 55 litre race bag tank and replace it with either a standard aluminium tank or a 32 litre bag tank and also remove the fancy 620R upright and brake assemblies and replace them with a set of new uprights, hubs, bearings etc and a set of used but perfectly good vented discs and AP 4 pot calipers - then I could get down to £12 - £14K for the rolling chassis as described.
If seriously interested then give me a call and we can have a chat about whatever works best.
Many thanks
Steve
