Description:

B19-71-8

OldRacingCars.com reports this history of chassis B19-71-8 as originally sold to Red Rose Racing for John Hine to drive in the 1971 European 2-litre Championship 1971.

The B19 debuted at Oulton Park  on April 9, 1971. However the car did not start due to an engine problem. At Paul Ricard on April 18th, the Chevron was co-driven by John Bridges. OldRacingCars.com goes on to say that B19-71-8 raced at the Salzburgring on May 23,  Silverstone on June 5th, and at the Trophée d'Auverne at Clermont Ferrand on June 20, 1971.

Unfortunately it was at the Clermont Ferrand event that the Chevron was in an accident during the race. OldRacingCars.com reports that the car was badly damaged in the shunt, and that a Chevron pincipal, Paul Owens, said the car did not survive the shunt

From this history now springs two Chevron B19's  that claim roots to the chassis B19-71-8; the ex-John Sheldon car and ex-Swart/Tugberk car.

OldRacingCars reports that the car not being offered here, the John Sheldon Car, was a new car constructed by Steve Sheldon in 1992. This new car's claim to chassis number B19-71-8 apparently stems from the purchase of an  "identity of B19-71-8" from John Bridges, as distinguished from the actual B19-71-8 car or its original parts. Regardless of its new origins in 1992, it seems the Sheldon car did generate its own racing history from 1992 onward as the Sheldon car.

The car being offered here is the ex-Swart/Tugberk car.

OldRacingCars presents the history of this car as one bought by Chevron works team driver and de facto Chevron U.S. importer, Ed Swart from an advert in Autosport in late 1988. Swart discussed the car at the time with Chevron Managing Director Roger Andreason. Andreason identified the car as 71-08, presumably by the chassis number stamped into the upper right rear corner of the frame, “AM 71 B19 -8.”  This car still retains that number stamping on the frame.

Andreason advised Swart that the car basically needed everything to be replaced. Regardless of the car’s condition, Swart still purchased the B19 and imported it to the U.S. Once in the U.S. Swart sold the car to Rasim Tugberk of Virginia.

OldRacingCars reports the ex Swart/Tugberk car as racing at the Walter Mitty Challenge at Road Atlanta in April, 1997. The car was in Blue Chip Racing colors. Tugberk also raced the B19 at the Daytona Continental Historics on Novemeber 1, 2003.

Tugberk then sold the B19 to well known five time IMSA racing champion, Jim Downing in 2005. Downing, in turn, sold the B19, advertised as chassis number 8, to Larry Kessler in upstate New York. Kessler raced the car at the Monterey Historic Automobile Races in 2005 and again in 2008. Kessler raced the car through the 2019 season before selling it to its current owner.

The B19 was last raced in the fall of 2022, where it won.

In 2023 we contacted Ed Swart about the history of the car. He that it was a long time ago, but that he stands by the history as reported by OldRacingCars regarding the B19 that he bought from Andreason and sold to Tugberk.

Currently there are only two races on the car's fresh Cosworth 2 liter YB engine. It has a Hewland FT 200 gearbox with CV joints. The B19 is maintained by a well known pro shop on the U.S. East Coast.

This B19 may must be the lowest priced Chevron B19 available anywhere in the world right now, and one that you can actually race at your next upcoming race. It is a real oppotunity.
