Description:

Crossle 9S (Continuation car)

The Crosslé Car Company has been producing race cars continuously since 1957 and is probably the world’s longest-established constructors of racing cars still producing cars today. Not only do Crosslé manufacture new race cars but provide an unrivalled restoration and repairs service backed up with all the experience, and history of this well-loved race car company.
The first sports racing car produced in 1963 was the 5S with a 1500cc Ford engine. Following some success, in 1965 the Crosslé 7S was introduced and in 1966 the Crosslé 9S emerged fitted with the BMW 2 litre engine and ready to contest the European International Two Litre Group Six Championship and achieving a 2nd place in The Tourist Trophy at Oulton Park 1966 (the winner was Denny Hulme in a Lola T70).

Eventually Crosslé decided to concentrate on their very successful single seater cars, but 20 years later in 1987 ‘continuation 9S cars started to be produced in small numbers at first for specific clients with various engines and updates to the original cars. When Arnie Black took over the Crosslé Car Company in 1997 he immediately saw the potential for a one-make series and so around 30 cars were built and sold combining the evocative shape and design with safety changes and a strong reliable ‘modern’ engine built by Paul Dunnell (2 litre ford Zetec).

This car for sale
I am only the second owner of this car chassis 44 which I purchased in 2009 and have enjoyed racing it across most of the UK circuits as well as Spa Francorchamps and Dijon.

In 2017 I decided to upgrade the original engine to the newer ‘black top’ Zetec engine from Paul Dunnell and although this is now 5 years ago there has been only very limited running time in this period, amounting to less than 20 hours. A Paul Dunnell engine is recommended for a refresh only after 70 hours and most run far longer. At the same time a new racing twin plate clutch was fitted and lightweight flywheel. The twin Weber 45 DCOEs have been serviced regularly.  The Hewland Mk9 5 speed gearbox had all new ratios fitted in 2019 and provides the usual smooth fast changes of this classic design.

With only limited racing available to me during the past 2 years I kept the car ready to go. In 2020 I upgraded the Fire extinguisher to a new Lifeline Zero 360 and fitted new Shroth belts.
In addition, there are several spares and 2 sets of the original Crosslé Compomotive wheels one set of worn ACB10s and the other fitted with Avon wets, plus a new set of lightweight split rims with little used Avon ACB10s fitted, Currently fitted with the 30ltr fuel tank ther is also a long-range fuel tank with accompanying seat, spare rear upright, ‘A’ arms, CV joints, some Hewland ratios, .
Mechanically I believe this car to be a sound and fast example of this simply outstanding race car. The bodywork does have some minor battle scars from racing and so could do with a refresh but ultimately it is a race car not a show car. The chassis is all good having been stripped, crack checked and re powder coated in 2012 and has the additional side safety bars to fully comply with regs.
If asked why I should buy this car, I would simply say it was one of the most exhilarating fun to drive race cars I have ever driven. I have been racing since 1985 in a variety of cars none of which come close to the enjoyment I have got from the Crosslé 9S. Once in the car and on the track, you will see what I mean (240 bhp, 550kg, and road legal tyres).
