SAAB 96 V4 HISTORIC RALLY CAR XBY 171 F

SPECIFICATION
The car was manufactured on 29 June 1967 and imported from Sweden into the UK in 1990 and issued with an age related registration number. Since then the car has since been totally rebuilt
BODYSHELL

Stripped to bare metal including removing all underseal and repaired where necessary. Strengthened according to the Saab Sport & Rally Manual. This consisted of the following;

• Fitting channel section along the top outer edge of the front inner wings

• Bracing top shock absorber mounting at front and double skinning rear top shock absorber mounting

• Strengthening front inner wing at steering arm aperture and mountings for lower wishbones

• Strengthening rear axle trailing link mountings on floor pan

• Front lower wishbones and rear axle trailing links strengthened

Additionally the inner and outer sills were double-skinned, all brake and fuel lines rerouted inside, mountings for competition seats and belts fitted and fireproofing to MSA requirements. Jacking points are fitted to facilitate the use of a Bilstein quick lift jack. The rear floor pan is modified to mount an additional silencer to meet MSA noise levels. Genuine SAAB works forest springs are fitted with recently manufacturer rebuilt Leda adjustable shock absorbers. The car is finished in Toreador Red.

The car is fitted with the following safety and navigational equipment:

• Safety Devices roll-cage.

• FIA approved front seats – Motamec Evo 2 valid until end 2022

• 6-point FIA safety belts – TRS Magnum valid until end 2022

• Peltor intercom

• SAAB competition steering wheel

• Halda Tripmaster

• Wired for GaugePilot electronic navigation instrument (can be included for extra cost)

• 4-day aircraft clock incorporating a stop watch and elapsed time, a separate stop watch

• Avanti map-light

• Plumbed-in and handheld fire extinguishers to MSA special stage requirements

ENGINE
1750cc using a long stoke crank and fitted with Hepolite Ford Pinto pistons with the following modifications;
Piper 285 cam. This is a modern profile of the no longer available Saab 7.6 rally cam
Steel balance shaft gear and alloy camshaft wheel
Modified flywheel according to Saab Sport & Rally
Uprated oil pump and drive shaft
Cylinder heads modified according to Saab Sport & Rally by Burton Engineering and are “unleaded”
These use larger inlet and exhaust valves with phosphur bronze guides.
Weber 40DFI carburettor on appropriate manifold with K & N air filter, pressure regulator and electric pump
Compression ratio is 10.5:1 and the car runs best on normal unleaded with Millers VSP additive
Big bore stillness steel exhaust system passing through rear of engine bay floor pan
Additional engine mountings to rear of block
13 row oil filter with stainless, braided lines and oilstat in sandwich plate.
40 litre foam filled alloy fuel tank in boot.

TRANSMISSION
SAAB Special Two close ratio gearset in late casing with large bearings. 4.88:1 Final drive. The clutch is an XP Diaphragm complete with 200mm disc, release bearing and flywheel. SAAB Special One close ratio gearset in late casing with large bearings supplied as spare.

COOLING SYSTEM
Uprated core in crossflow casing, recently overhauled with large expansion tank. Fitted with electric fan. Thermostat removed. Fan is thermostatically controlled with manual override facility. Spare 3 core radiator.

BRAKING SYSTEM
Standard discs and drums with servo. All brake lines are inside the car with Aeroquip hoses at the wheels. Front discs fitted with Mintex M1144 competition pads, standard linings on rear drums. Rear brakes fitted with 17mm bore cylinders to improve brake bias (standard size 15mm). Fly off handbrake.

The car has
4 x Minilite 5J x 15 alloy wheels fitted with Maxxis 165 x 15 tyres
6 x Minilite 5J x 15 alloy wheels fitted with Vredestein Snow Classic 165R15 86Q
4 x Steel wheels 4 x 15 fitted with studded Vredestein Snow Classic 165R15 86Q
5 x Steel wheels 4 x 15 fitted with 165×15 Colway Rally Plus gravel tyres

ELECTRICS

Cibie 7” Quartz Halogen headlights with Lucas Quartz boot -mounted reversing lamp, quick release lampbar carrying 2 Super Oscar long range lamps and 2 Oscar driving lamps. A SAAB 99 type 55 Amp alternator with internal diode pack is fitted. All the wiring for the rally accessories is in separate harnesses with separate fuse box and properly protected by relays where appropriate.
