Mercedes Benz Sprinter 316 CDi LWB Custom built car transporter / race van

This unique and one off vehicle was originally commissioned to carry a Radical SR3 with ultimate ease and comfort in mind.

The original conversion to the rear was carried out by PRG Trailers to their usual extremely high standard.

The front cab was completely re-trimmed and customised by Revere and they transformed the usual Sprinter cab into an extremely nice place to be.

I purchased it approximately 2 years ago to transport a Radical PR6 and Caterham 7 to race meetings.

I also commissioned some additional work to be carried out to the rear section so that not only could a car be transported easily, but also included additional storage for tools, spares, petrol cans, wheels / tyres etc.

At the same time the front section of the box (accessed via the separate personnel door) was converted into a simple sleeping / living area.

A brief outline of the features are as follows:

FRONT CAB

• Black leather seats, with luxury quilt stitching. Double seat base padding for additional comfort. Mercedes Benz emblem embossed on headrests.

• Matching black leather door trim panels, again with luxury quilt stitching.

• Gloss black trim and facia panels.

• USB charger ports built into the dash facia

• Pioneer Double Din Infotainment system consisting of Sat Nav, Rear Camera, Radio, Bluetooth, USB inputs etc

• Pioneer 400W Amplifier plus Sub-woofer installed underneath front seats

• Controls for the compressor for the individual rear suspension air bags

• Privacy glass

LIVING / SLEEPING AREA

Assessed via the separate personnel door, the front section of the box has been partitioned off and consists of:

• a large double bed, (bedding / pillows etc  not included)

• two comfortable seats, (which fold down when not in use)

• a small table,

• storage space over the cab and under the seats

• LED lighting

• Two sky lights

• Insulated roof

REAR CAR / WORKSHOP AREA

• Beaver tailed rear section, aluminium floor.

• Space for car on the internal ramps is   4.0m long by 1.66m wide.

• The total width of the rear box is 2.07m which could be utilised if needed for a wider car by moving or even completely removing the internal ramps.

• Brand new Superwinch with fixed switch plus extra-long fly lead located at rear door

• Separate large 12V leisure battery which is on a split charging system so is charged via the engine during journeys

• Internal aluminium ramps for the car, hence providing storage space underneath the front of the car when loaded

• Partitioned side storage areas

• Two specific storage areas for 20l jerry cans

• Aluminium workbench

• Two large tool cabinets for storage of tools and spares (optional)

• Two large side drawer cabinets for additional storage of spares etc (optional)

• Large rear door ramp fitted with non-slip strips

• Extra-long aluminium ramps to make the loading of very low ground clearance cars very easy.

• Two large aluminium tyre racks each side of the rear section. These fold up out of the way when not in use.

• Skylight

• Insulated roof

SPRINTER VAN

• This is a 316 CDI LWB Sprinter, so 160 bhp and bags of torque for easy, relaxed driving even when fully loaded.

• Only 64,896 miles from new (this may increase slightly as I may continue to use the vehicle until it is sold)

• Present MoT valid until 1st May 2019 but the van will come with a new full 12 months on the van for the new owner.

• There is a service history with the van and it had a full engine service and brake overhaul last year and has done approximately 2,000 miles since.

• Alloy wheels with matching Michelin tyres

• New battery for the van this year plus an isolator to stop the battery draining if not used frequently (useful security measure too).

• Individual air bags on each side of the rear suspension – these not only enable a level load at all times but also can be used to assist with loading / unloading extremely low ground clearance vehicles and also to level the rear box and ramp if parked on a slope in a race paddock etc.

• Fitted with a tow bar and 12 volt, 7 pin socket for a trailer. Towing capacity is 2000 kgs.

• Two large LED flood lights to assist with loading / unloading in the dark and also extremely useful when reversing in the dark as they are switchable from the driver’s seat in the cab.

• Alarm and Immobiliser

• Park distance control for both front and rear of vehicle

The vehicle is in excellent overall condition, and makes transporting a race / track car extremely easy and relaxed, indeed even luxurious compared to towing a trailer with a van etc !

The ease of driving and manoeuvrability plus security of everything you need being contained with the van are a great bonus in my opinion. Plus the front living / sleeping area means that it is possible to stay overnight at the race circuits and therefore avoid having to get up at unholy hours of the morning and then fighting for a space in the paddock etc.

Being based upon a LWB Sprinter (3.5MT gross weight), the running costs are lower and it avoids the expense and hassle associated with running a larger gross weight lorry based transporter etc.

This is a very reluctant sale of a pretty unique vehicle and one that I feel I may well regret, however to accommodate the wishes of my pit crew (ie dearly beloved better half and family !!), I have a full blown motorhome for this year and can’t drive both vehicles to circuits, hence the sale.
