Description:
Volkswagen Spiess F3 'Power' engine
In 2012-14 the German Formula 3 Series adopted regulations requiring the use of a
nominated engine. The chosen unit was a VW engine developed by Spiess to produce 220bhp in conventional F3 restricted form but featuring a novel 'Push to Pass' facility that increased
power output by 20 bhp (to 240-248 depending on which bit of marketing blurb you believe) which could be activated by the drivers on a limited number of times per race. The additional power came courtesy of an ECU controlled system that allowed additional air into the manifold on limited prescribed occasions. The 'Power' engines were also designed to have an enhanced service life with 10000km between inspection/rebuilds. they were thus both more powerful and longer lived than the conventional F3 engine.
This engine was built by Spiess for the German Series and comes complete with flywheel/clutch/coils/basic engine wiring/sensors/induction system & will be supplied with intake trumpets for unrestricted use. It has the usual Dallara alloy dry sump base casting and large winged structural rocker cover. An exhaust system may also be available at additional cost.
The engine would seem ideal for use in a hillclimb/sprint Dallara as, mapped with a suitable ECU, it could offer significant power in unrestricted form and provide long life at very modest cost. Alternatively, it could readily be installed in a non Dallara single seat or sports car chassis
The sump & head were removed and inspection shows the engine to be in excellent order
internally.
