1966 McLaren - Chevrolet M1B
Originally supplied to Lothar Motschenbacher in February 1966, an up and coming German driver, and was first raced in April 1966 in the USRRC at Stardust Raceway, Las Vegas. Motschenbacher raced regularly in USRRC Can-Am Series throughout 1966 and 1967 with this car. Mid way through 1966 he joined Dan Blocker's Nickey Vinageroon team, and the car was repainted white and purple at this time.
Motschenbacher won his first USRRC race at Mid Ohio in 1966 with this car and finished 2nd at Bridgehampton against the likes of Chuck Parsons and Mark Donohue, and finished second on another two occasions to Bruce McLaren at Mosport and St Jovite. Winning again in May '67 at Laguna Seca and regularly in the top 5 during the first part of the season, Motschenbacher ws signed by Dana Chevrolet to race their new M1C and this car was sold to Ron Herrera.
This car then passed to Phil henry and Chuck McConnell before being bought by collector Bruce McCaw in 1984, who fully restored the car during his ownership. The car sold to John Monson and he raced the car at Goodwood Revival in 2010 and has been raced regularly at Goodwood Revival and Members meetings over the last few years. In addition a regular competitor in The Masters Series in Europe, in 2016 the car was raced in the Can Am 50 year celebration in the USA, and won the Gr A of the 2017 Sebring Classic 12 hrs, as well as finishing 2nd in Gr A at the Daytona 24h Classic.
The car is featured in the definitive McLaren book by William Taylor, and has benefitted from a complete rebuild during 2017, including bare chassis rebuild, rebuilt engine by Peter Knight (1 race since rebuild), new gearbox case / side plates , crack test completed mid 2017, current FIA HTP papers - valid until 2025. Spares include 2 sets spare wheels, spare wishbones, gear ratios and basic running spares.
