Description:

An opportunity to acquire a unique and desirable Ferrari powered Spice Engineering Touring Lights Prototype race car. This Spice is fresh, race prepped and ready to go.

The Spice Ferrari has received top-notch maintenance throughout its historic racing tenure, most recently from K-Hill Motorsports (Abbottstown, Pa.) in 2018. K-Hill removed the engine and gearbox from the chassis, performing a full service and new clutch with attention to wiring, brakes, drive shaft, fluids and full-race prep. This following the 2017 engine rebuild completed by Marcovicci Engineering (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.). The engine is Dyno Time only. It has updated MoTeC electronics and telemetry.

Previously, Savannah Race Engineering (Savannah, Georgia) completed a $23,000 engine rebuild, including Dyno Test, installed by ex-Spice Engineering race driver David Loring in March 2012. Hudson Historics, formerly Bob Aiken Motorsports, in Warwick, N.Y. and J.R. Mitchell at GMT Racing in Newton, Connecticut have also completed care and maintenance on this Spice.

History
Gordon and Derek Spice formed Spice Engineering in 1984 intending to build Grand Touring Prototype race cars of their own design to compete in IMSA GT and World Sportscar Championships. Together with Ray Bellm they designed and built a competitive chassis that could be adapted for Pontiac, Buick, Acura or even Ferrari power. With backing from General Motors in 1987, they fielded a multi-car team for IMSA GT Championship's “Lights” category, including this car.

Chassis SE87L-001 was the first of three built that year. GM’s involvement indicated the use of Pontiac engines and labeling the cars as Pontiac Fiero GTPs. During the 1987 season this chassis won its class at the 500km Road Atlanta, 500km Riverside, 300km Laguna Seca, 500km Mid-Ohio and 3hr San Antonio, placed second in class at 300km Portland and finished in top 10 in class 12 times. Spice Engineering raced SE87L-001 into 1988 and scored two more first in class finishes at the 500km Mid-Ohio and the 300km Portland, a second in class at the 150 lap Lime Rock and ten Top 10 class finishes.

Primarily driven by Don Bell and Jeff Kline in sprint races, then occasionally with Charles Morgan, Costas Los and Hendrik ten Cate in 12 and 24 hours races. In 1988, Dominic Dobson did many of the sprint races. This is the most successful of the three SE87L Pontiac powered Spice Chassis.

After GM's involvement, SE87L-001 was sold, in 1990, to Racecraft International of Lakeland, Florida where it received updated bodywork., upgraded 4-corner suspension and the latest designs from the Spice Acura race cars.

The red Denon livery and Ferrari power was installed during the ownership of Joe Hish. Although this car did not run a Ferrari powerplant in period, other cars, Tiga, Alba and Argo, did. Today, SE87L-001 continues racing in historic events on the East Coast, with favorable recognition.
