1965 LOLA T70 MKI SPYDER - CHASSIS SL70/3 - SOLD

This is now SOLD. Search for similar items.

Description:

SL70/3 was the first T70 to be built and made its public debut at the end of January 1965, at the London Racing Car Show held at the Olympia Exhibitions Halls. Painted dark blue with a white centre stripe, the car was the star of the show.

After the show, the car was sold to John Mecom on the 11th March then flown out by air arriving at Houston on the morning of the 13th. This was the first T70 exported to the USA.

On arrival in America, SL70/3 was re-sprayed in the metallic blue and white racing colours of the Mecom Racing Team and promptly entered into the Sebring 12 Hours. The week before the 12 hours, SL70/3 was taken to Sebring for initial shakedown and pre-event checks, where it ran well.

The car's racing debut therefore came at the 1965 Sebring 12 Hours, where, driven by John Cannon and Jack Saunders, the car unfortunately retired when an oil cooler broke. At Pensacola for the frist round of the 1965 USRRC in early April, Walt Hansgen put the car on pole, however, he retired after twelve laps. In early May, at Riverside, Hansgen qualified third but was forced to use Mecom's new mid-engined Scarab after a cracked block on the engine. At Laguna Seca, Hansgen retired again, this time after only eleven laps and then didn't show up at Bridgehampton because he was busy trying to qualify for the Indy 500. At the beginning of June, during qualifying for the Players 200 at Mosport, Hansgen crashed and this was its last race in period. The car has a continuous history entering the Rofgo Collection in 2011.

Freshly race prepared by Rofgo Racing, with new FIA papers, newly inspected tanks, and only one test in March 2017 since a crack test, chassis SL70/3 is ready to run all over Europe with Patrick Peter's CER or indeed win the Whitsun Trophy at the Revival.
