The car was purchased with the intent to convert it for competition in BMW Club Racing, but the project was shelved prior to it’s start after the acquisition of another BMW M3. Stored indoors since purchase, the car was used for a single Evolution autocross school before being put into storage. Prior to storage, the fluids were changed, and the fuel system emptied.
The car features a MA-Shaw composite widebody kit, capable of swallowing the massive 345/35-18 Hoosier race slicks in the back, and 285/30-18 Hoosiers in the front without rubbing or interference. The tires, mounted on custom built 18” CCW wheels still hold air, but have long expired for competition use.
The engine is virtually brand new – a freshly built motor by Rebello Racing just prior to Richardson’s winning season. It is no longer a normally aspirated 3.0L motor – it is now a 2.9L motor (2985cc), built from a BMW Aluminum block, a 3.2L crankshaft, with forged rods and custom lower compression pistons to accommodate the forced induction provided by the turbo.
The turbo setup is a custom built tubular ceramic coated manifold, low mount GT35R turbo, utilizing a scavenge pump to return oil from the turbo to the oil pan. Full specifics on the turbo setup are listed further down, but on a conservative tune of 10PSI in 2006 after the new engine was completed the car produced 400+hp and 370+lb/ft of torque. Current estimates put less than 125 miles on the engine since it was rebuilt.
The exhaust terminates under the center of the car, and it a custom built 3” setup with a turn down tip. Street use would require fabricating a new exhaust to exit at the rear of the car. The stock fuel tank was removed when the car was built, and a 5 gallon fuel cell installed in the trunk. A stock fuel tank could easily be reinstalled in the chassis for street use.
With over 400 horsepower on tap, the builders found it necessary to install a RaceLogic traction control system – allowing user defined levels of slip, and Launch Control. Slip rate can be controlled from inside the cockpit, using a rotary knob control located in the center console. Alongside the RaceLogic traction control panel is a Greddy turbo timer. Data logging and engine management is handled by an Electromotive TEC III management system.
Presently tuned to run on 116 octane race fuel, the car could be used in it’s current state, or could be the basis for a custom S54 engine swap (2001-2006 E46 M3 Motor).
The sunroof is non-functional, as the sunroof cassette was lightened/modified to remove weight from the top of the car, shaving off over 25lbs in the process. The headliner in the car is a standard E36 coupe headliner, with NO opening for a sunroof.
