Introduced in 1962 as the successor to the hugely successful MGA, the MGB quickly established itself as one of the world’s best-loved British sports cars. Combining elegant styling, traditional rear-wheel-drive dynamics and straightforward mechanicals, it offered genuine sporting ability alongside everyday usability. Early examples, including the distinctive ‘pull-handle’ cars produced through to 1965, are particularly appreciated by enthusiasts and represent an important part of the model’s early history.
The MGB’s sporting credentials were established almost immediately, with factory and privateer cars competing successfully at some of the world’s most prestigious events, including the 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Monte Carlo Rally and Targa Florio. Its robust mechanicals, predictable handling and extensive period competition history have subsequently made it an enduringly popular choice for historic racing.
Today, FIA-prepared MGBs remain highly sought after, with homologation opening the door to a broad range of prestigious historic events across the UK and Europe, including those organised by Masters Historic Racing, the HSCC and Peter Auto. Combined with its strong period competition pedigree, extensive specialist support and relatively straightforward running costs, the MGB offers an exceptionally accessible route into serious historic motor racing.
This particular car, first registered in February 1964, is presented in an attractive blue with white hardtop and benefits from an extensive competition history in both the UK and Europe. ‘FUR 161B’ was owned and prepared for a period of 17 years by the highly respected historic racing specialists Martin Stretton Racing, during which time it competed in the Spa Six Hours on three occasions, alongside appearances at Zandvoort and throughout the British historic racing scene. Klasiko subsequently sourced the car for its current owner late last year, following a search for a presentable and well-prepared FIA MGB.
Following its purchase, this year the car was looked after by Tom Poulton of ADH Racing. Recent maintenance includes a replacement clutch, new wheel bearings, new brake shoes and the installation of an MSD ignition system. The 1,840cc Mass Racing-built engine was also recently overhauled by ADH Racing, incorporating JE pistons, Carrillo rods and King Racing bearings. The engine produces a strong 159.5bhp at 6,059rpm, with 151.2 ft-lbs of torque.
Now offered for sale as its owner looks to focus on a different project, a fresh FIA HTP has been accepted and documentation is currently awaited. Accompanying the car is an extensive history file containing a large collection of setup sheets, lap charts, results sheets and information relating to its years with Martin Stretton Racing, together with the current V5C document.
A comprehensive collection of spares is also included, comprising various spare rims, a set of unused Dunlop tyres, spare alternator, brake pads, radiator and sundry running spares.
Overall, an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-prepared and extensively campaigned FIA MGB, offering strong historic racing provenance, a comprehensive history file and an extensive collection of spares, ready for its next owner to enjoy.
