Early production Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider with documented history and long-term North American race ownership
WDL-built competition engine producing 146bhp, with extensive race specification throughout
Eligible for a wide range of prestigious pre-1966 historic race series including HRDC, HSCC, Masters and Equipe
Launched on 27 June 1962 at the Monza Autodrome, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider represented the final evolution of Alfa Romeo’s much-admired Giulietta-based open sports cars. Built by Pininfarina, the Spider combined delicate Italian styling with Alfa Romeo’s advanced engineering, most notably the free-revving 1,570cc all-aluminium twin-cam engine that became a hallmark of the Giulia range. Produced until 1965, the model offered an appealing blend of lightweight construction, spirited performance and beautifully balanced handling — qualities which saw it enjoy success both as a road car and in period competition.
According to the Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo, chassis AR374229 — an early production example — was manufactured on 3 November 1962 and supplied to Alfa Romeo Germany in Frankfurt, where it was first registered on 27 March the following year. When delivered, the car was fitted with an AR00112 engine and presented in Blue with a Grey interior.
This particular Giulia, registration ‘WRT 54A’, has enjoyed a long-standing history as a race car in North America. Previously owned by the President of the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) for some 37 years, the car was at that time presented in Red with the iconic single aero screen. Around 2006 it was restored and repainted back to Blue — retaining its aero screen — before later being configured to European FIA specification, with its FIA papers last issued in 2009.
The car benefits from a WDL-built engine featuring Sprunel 79mm JE forged pistons with machined crowns, Hastings rings, honed liners, Carollo rods, a 116-series sump and further performance upgrades. Rebuilt in 2009, the engine produced a strong 146.1bhp when dyno tested, with only limited use since. Further specification includes a reinforced axle with 2-litre halfshafts, a Gripper differential and low-ratio crown wheel and pinion. The race suspension features RMR front springs and anti-roll bar, while a Fabricage lightweight roll cage is complemented by a Pininfarina-style lightweight hardtop.
Having seen relatively little use on track in recent years, the car last benefited from extensive works between 2015 and 2016, largely carried out by DTR Sports Cars. These works included the installation of a replacement clutch and spigot bearing, the rear suspension and axle being stripped and rebuilt with a new LSD, a replacement exhaust, reinforced inner and outer sills, repairs to corrosion on the boot lid, new headlights and extensive servicing including replacement distributor components, carburettor seals and gaskets, along with further fettling throughout. The total expenditure during this period amounted to over £14,500.
Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file including the expired FIA papers dated 2009, previous Italian homologation papers, a large collection of invoices — including documentation for the engine build and dyno printout — a previous sales advert, photographs and printed race results showing regular finishes within the top third of the field.
This charming Giulia Spider presents a fantastic opportunity for entry into a wide variety of historic race series. Eligible for numerous pre-1966 GT championships including HRDC, GTSCC, Masters, HSCC, Equipe and more, the Alfa Romeo is perhaps one of the prettiest cars you can race — competing against the likes of E-Types, Cobras, Healeys, Mustangs, Elans and Minis — for a mere fraction of the price.
