Allard J2 Sports

Description:

This wonderful car dates from 1950 and is an Allard J2 sports built by Sidney Allard in the UK with the Ford Mercury engine and the Ardun head conversion of which about only 20 were ever made. Registered LLP 797 and chassis number 99J1693.

She was first owned by Captain Rupert de Larinaga who was part of the British ski team and he raced her extensively and she appears throughout the Allard story plus she retains the original registration number. She was exported to the United States of America and in the early 1970's she was found neglected in Ohio by Dean Butler (original phoptos are in the file), a supremely knowledgable collector of a variety of stunning road and race cars. I bought the car from Dean some 20+ years ago and have enjoyed her excentricity enormously. The most fun you can have with your trousers on.

The car is highly original with original parts from kitchen door handles to gate hinges as well as the original three speed gearbox and all sorts of other items/aspects. I had a new engine built 4/5 years ago by Jim Turnbull at Royal Kustoms but what I assume is the original engine is with the car although in need of a rebuild. The torque is amazing and with the three speed gearbox it is a wonderful sound and sight ploughing up the Italian Alps on a variety of rallies including the MIlle MIglia and the Legende de Bassano, Vernasca Silver Flag, Schloss Dyck to mention but a few.

Set up for regularity rallies the dash is signed by Zachary 'Zora' Arkus-Duntov (the 'father' of the Corvette) and shje has received a tremendous amount of work in my ownership and in the last 2-3 years Anthony Seddon has been responsible for making her very reliable and more fun.

The histroy file contains a myriad of information inluding the original works record card, the original J2 sales brochure, various copies of the Tailwagger (the Allard Club Magazine), Vintage Racecar showing 1693 at Road Atlanta,  a 1980 copy of Old Motor, a letter from David Kinsella, copies of Autosport, technical information, a letter from Tom Lush with a report from him on the car and two original Ohio number plates. Simply too much to list.

A rare example of a rare car and she is welcomed everywhere as a stunning piece of British ingenuity with an American power plant. Would Shelby have thought of Britain to find the car to put the V8 in without Sidney?
