1965 Ford Anglia Super (123E) Race Car

Description:

In 1962, Ford introduced the Anglia Super to the range with a higher level of equipment. Engine capacity was increased to 1,198cc and it was now fitted with the all-synchromesh 4-speed gearbox from the Cortina. There was more chrome, a luxury interior and a heater as standard. Strap on a pair of spot lights and you had a useful rally car. The engine was capable of being modified to produce much more power and it became the motive power unit for various forms of motorsport. The Ford Anglia was entered in the Monte Carlo Rally from 1960-65 finishing consistently above its station, and today rally and racing Anglias are still an important and competitive part of the historic scene and are homologated by the FIA at 997cc, 1,198cc and1,340cc.

This, brightly hued, Anglia Super, was acquired by its present custodian over two decades ago with the intention of creating a serious historic race car conceived expressly for circuit competition within the HSCC and HRSR arenas. Following its initial build and shakedown outing at Snetterton in 2006, an on-track incident prompted a decisive and no-expense-spared change of direction. What followed was a comprehensive, ground-up rebuild, centred around an exceptional replacement bodyshell sourced specifically for the task. The project was entrusted to well-known tin-top racer Bill Buck, whose oversight ensured that the finished car would be not only fully compliant with Pre-’66 Racing Saloon regulations, but genuinely competitive within them.

At its heart sits a Boss-Racing rebuilt 1,600cc Kent pre-crossflow engine, complete with dry-sump lubrication, delivering its power via a Bullet 4-speed gearbox with alloy bellhousing and twin-plate clutch. The drivetrain is matched to a properly developed rear end featuring four-link suspension and a limited-slip differential - exactly as you would hope to see on a front-running example.

Braking is equally serious, with AP Racing hardware throughout: four-pot calipers at the front and two-pot units at the rear. Supporting components include a high-torque starter motor, high-output alternator, aluminium fuel tank and the very desirable heated front windscreen, invaluable for those inevitable damp race days. The Anglia sits on lightweight Revolution wheels shod with a fresh set of Yokohama tyres (rolling road use only) and the sale also includes four spare wheels, two of which are fitted with matching rubber.

Presenting extremely well throughout, this is a rare opportunity for the seasoned historic racer or ambitious newcomer to acquire a proven, correctly engineered Anglia at a fraction of its build cost. Notably, the sale also includes the braked trailer shown in the accompanying images, complete with powered winch - a significant and welcome addition.

Your early inspection is strongly encouraged to fully appreciate the quality, preparation and value on offer with this most engaging and eminently usable historic Ford.
