Gordon Spice, a former racing driver turned highly successful prototype constructor
Gordon Spice, an accomplished British driver, began collaborating with General Motors to produce his own cars. His racing career started in the mid-1960s, after which he shifted his focus toward developing racing cars, notably creating Tigas before founding Spice Engineering in 1986. In 1985, following a successful season in the C2 class — achieving five wins in seven races on a Tiga GC84/Spice-Tiga GC85 — Gordon Spice secured a contract with General Motors to design chassis capable of housing a Pontiac engine for the Camel Lights championship (the equivalent of C2 in IMSA). This partnership led to the creation of the Spice Pontiac Fiero GTP, named after the road model from which the prototype drew certain design elements.
Spice cars quickly gained prominence in the Lights category in both the United States and Europe, with several customer teams achieving remarkable results. From the 1989 season, S&L Racing demonstrated that the 3-liter version of the Buick Indy Lights V6 engine was significantly superior to the four-cylinder Pontiac engine. In 1989, their Spice equipped with the Buick V6 engine won the Lights championship, with drivers Scott Schubot and Linda Ludemann securing 8 victories and 10 poles. In 1990, the official Spice Engineering team also claimed the title, thanks to driver Tomas Lopez and the Buick engine. Subsequently, Spice Engineering partnered with Acura and Comptech Engineering, winning three more championships between 1991 and 1993.
The Spice-Buick SE87L chassis 003 offered for sale recently demonstrated its performance at the Spa Classic and the Le Mans Classic.
Today, the Spice-Buick SE87L-003 presents an excellent opportunity for an enthusiast seeking a well-prepared, highly capable car that is eligible for all major historic racing events.
Originally built and delivered to Whitehall Motorsport (owned by Tom Winters and Bill Koll), the SE87L-003 was first equipped with a Pontiac engine and later converted to Buick power in 1992 by Essex Racing. Competing in IMSA from 1987 to 1992, it achieved numerous victories with renowned drivers such as John Paul Jr., Jeff Kline, Bill Koll, Skeeter McKitterick, Tom Hessert, Bob Schader, and others. The car raced at Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, the 24 Hours of Daytona, Road Atlanta, Sebring, Laguna Seca, and Sears Point, accumulating five wins, five second places, and setting a lap record.
Subsequently, the car competed in HSR for several years with drivers like Shane Lewis, Dorsey Schroeder, Jeff Kline, Roger Mandeville, Gary Pearson, EFR, John Morton, Walt Boren, Ian James, under the ownership of Mark Pritchard. Under its current owner, SE87L-003 has enjoyed success on both sides of the Atlantic: at Laguna Seca and more recently in Europe. In 2025, newly arrived from the USA where it had been prepared by J&L Fabricating, it was entered at Spa Classic, winning two categories in C2, and secured a podium at the 2025 Le Mans Classic during the Sprint race.
Many opportunities await the Buick-powered Spice C2 to compete in 2026, including the HSR series in the United States (Monterey Historic, Daytona Classic…), the Group C Racing series by Peter Auto, the Masters Group C series participating in the Grand Prix de France Historique at Castellet, as well as the Mans Classic Legend, where Group C cars will race in Plateau 7 with more track time than in previous editions. With lower maintenance costs due to its Buick engine, this car offers excellent prospects for its next owner.
