This Lotus Cortina has been disassembled and reassembled by the builder Mats Andersson Sweden AB. Mats Andersson can best be described as Sweden’s equivalent of Ken Miles and Smokey Yunick – legends from the 1960s racing era, when cars were often developed and modified by the drivers themselves. The result is a car that can be compared to a treasure chest of unique engineering solutions, some of which push the limits of what’s considered permissible.

The engine is a 1550 cc unit with a cylinder head signed by one of the top builders from the 1960s. The head has been refined and restored by an engine specialist in Gävle. The block has been bored and fitted with new Accralite pistons and custom-made connecting rods from Farndorn, England, produced to our exact specifications. The lifter gallery has been modified with steel sleeves and new high-quality lifters. The engine has never been bench-tested but still delivers impressive power – enough that the aluminum mounts holding the differential gave way under maximum load.

The rear axle has therefore been replaced with a 1967 Ford Cortina Lotus axle featuring a new differential. The car has never been raced with this axle, something that is evident upon inspection of the undercarriage. The rear leaf springs were manufactured by Lesjöfors based on drawings from around 1968, sourced from Ford’s competition department.

The engine also contains several rare components: the crankshaft, which currently costs £6000 according to Burton Power, is newly manufactured with the correct stroke, and the engine block is of the same type that Stig Blomqvist used in his Escort with co-driver Goni – a very rare block indeed.

Furthermore, new front fenders (right and left), front section, and other body parts have been produced using original 1963 tooling, a process that took about six months. This work was carried out by Express Steel Panels in England. It is also worth noting that the 1966 Lotus Cortina no longer featured aluminum doors and panels, as Ford had by then moved production in-house from Lotus. This makes the 1966 model the very last of its kind.

The car boasts a strong competition history. Among its most notable achievements is the Swedish Rally 2013, where Petter Solberg took overall victory – and this car, driven by Björn Sjunning, finished 1st in class and 10th overall. With Sjunning as driver and Christer Göransson as co-driver, the car has also won the Midnight Sun Rally several times, as well as the Swedish Cup.

For seriously interested buyers, further details are available directly from builder Mats Andersson, who knows every square centimeter of this exceptional vehicle.
