Built from the 993 Carrera 2 coupe platform, the 993 Cup 3.8 emerged from Porsche’s competition department as the direct replacement for the 964-based Carrera Cup 3.6. Created with the 1994 Supercup series in mind, it was powered by the newly developed 3.8-litre M64/70 engine. This unit produced 310 bhp at 6,100 rpm (an increase of 40 bhp over the previous Cup model) and delivered a top speed of 280 km/h.
Although the official redline was 6,900 rpm, the engine’s use of RSR-derived valve-train components meant it could be safely pushed to 7,900 rpm. The powertrain was paired with an upgraded six-speed G50/30 manual transaxle equipped with a 40% limited-slip differential. A Matter rollcage, welded directly into the chassis, greatly improved rigidity. Weight reduction was extensive: power steering, trim, carpeting, upholstery, and sound insulation were removed. The cockpit featured a single Recaro race seat with Sabelt harness, a Momo steering wheel, integrated fire suppression, and on-board air jacks.
Underneath, the suspension received significant upgrades and a lowered ride height. Braking came from large ventilated and cross-drilled discs with five-channel ABS, working with 18-inch Speedline three-piece center-lock wheels. Additional weight savings came via an aluminum front hood, deletion of the door reinforcement beams, thinner side glass, and a plastic rear window, resulting in a final weight of just 1,100 kg. Interestingly, for the 1994 season, the 993 Cup 3.8 was run without front or rear spoilers, retaining an essentially standard exterior profile.
