1978 Leyland Mini FIA Sprint & Hill Climb Car
Modified class C1
Leyland Mini first registered in April 1978, shell was used to build a Hill climb car for the 1992 season, then converted to Modified class in 2006, each year the engine has been stripped and rebuilt. Removable fibreglass front which provides good access, whenever work is undertaken. Doors, boot and arches all fibreglass.
1380cc Engine originally built by John Read of Carburation and injection services of Plymouth, since then has been looked after with help from Slark Race engineering for the cylinder head and Janspeed rolling road tuning of Salisbury for achieving the 107bhp at 7000rpm.
Engine runs a Swiftune SW23-07 cam, 73.5mm Omega forged pistons, Cooper S rods, Cooper S EN40B crank, Swiftune featherlight flywheel and starter motor, 45 DCOE Webber with Maniflow inlet manifold and Maniflow exhaust manifold with Miglia spec reverse megaphone exhaust. Aldon race distributor with Luminition electronic ignition, Denso alternator, Davies-Craig electric water pump, alloy radiator with expansion vessel, oil cooler.
Jack knight Involute dog gearbox driving a Tranex plate LSD transmitting power via jack knight drive shafts. Straight cut drop gears and semi helical Crown and pinion. Internal gear lever raised to the optimum position with the help of the Force racing internal gear linkage and tower. An Omex shift light can be set up to provide bright LED indication of rpm.
RRS steering wheel. Full roll cage and removable door bars on both sides to comply with FIA regs for Sprint and Hill Climbing modified class, complete with current RAC Logbook//passport.
Also has a V5C.
Strengthened front subframe has been modified to allow a lower ride height, whilst maintaining all the original suspension mounts and geometry. Bump steer bushes added to reduce bump steer.
Force Engineering Titanium bottom arms, rose jointed coupled with rose jointed front steel tie rods allow the suspension to be fully adjustable. Spax Krypton adjustable front shock absorbers, Gaz adjustable rear shock absorbers, rear suspension taken care of by a fabricated beam axle fitted with disc brakes purely to save weight and remove the radius arms.
All 4 wheels have braking available to comply with the regulations for this class but an isolation valve next to the driver seat isolates the brake line from the rear brakes so they don’t operate whilst the car is being driven, all braking can be done by the front 8.4” discs with 4 pot calipers, rear suspension all rose jointed allowing camber and tracking adjustments to be made as required.
Goodridge braided brake hoses.
Two sets of 13-inch wheels, travel/wet JB 13s with Cooper Rally Classic Wets and Force wheels with Avon slicks.
Alloy 1-gallon fuel tank with 574A electronic Facet fuel pump and filter king filter/pressure regulator.
All surplus wiring has been removed together with carpets and head lining, all glass is now polycarbonate sheet except windscreen, remote emergency pull handle, mounted in front of the windscreen operates the master isolator switch removing power to the whole car from the Varley Red Top 20. Sparco Circuit seat with OMP belts. Heated and tinted from screen. Rebuilt brakes, MSUK passport valid till 0/05/35
Achieved 3rd place in ASWMC Sprint Championship 2012, DEWS Championship Class award 2015, numerous class awards in the ASWMC Hill Climb and Sprint events. Power increased since then together with addition of the Jack Knight Dog gearbox
