The Subaru Leone helped cement Japan’s reputation for reliability and durability during the 1970s. Launched in 1971, the first generation Leone quickly became a regular fixture on the tough, long rallies of the Asia-Pacific region, where reliability was more important than speed!

This Leone Coupé 1400 GL began its history in Angola in 1973, arriving in Portugal in 1976.

Three decades later, it headed to the Czech Republic, where it underwent a very special restoration and preparation at the hands of Racing 21, the training company of the famous Czech driver Vojtěch Štajf.

Thanks to his rally experience and engineering know-how, Štajf modernised and prepared this Leone to face any challenge without losing its fundamental characteristic – reliability. The original 1.4 boxer engine was replaced by a 1.6 EJ16 unit, taken from an Impreza GC, which now, thanks to the application of two Weber carburettors, develops 143 hp.

The chassis has also undergone extensive preparation, with coilover suspension, with camber adjustment, and a reinforced stabilizer bar. Braking is handled by Willwood brake calipers with ventilated discs.

In the cockpit, the roll cage, built based on FIA regulations, greatly helps with the torsional rigidity of the entire assembly and, together with the Sparco Kevlar backets and 6-point belts, guarantees the safety of the driver and navigator.

Vojtěch Štajf put this car to the test in the historic Carrera Panamericana in 2014 and 2015. The famous Mexican endurance race is a true test of the reliability and performance of its participants. With 4,000 km driven at a fast pace, the Leone secured victory in the Historica A Plus class in 2014 and fourth place the following year!

In 2025 it took part in the Spirit Rally, in Portugal, with Fernando Soares and Nuno Rodrigues da Silva at the controls. It is delivered with an extensive file with complete history, FPAK passport, a spare EJ16 engine, a spare gearbox, various wear material and two extra sets of Minilite rims with tires.
