Following the disappointing performance and subsequent withdrawal of Peugeot from Formula 1 in 2000, Asiatech acquired the French manufacturer's entire engine department. Using the Peugeot A20 power unit — known for its reliability issues related to the cylinder head and engine block — as a baseline, Asiatech undertook a comprehensive redevelopment program. The result was the Asiatech 001, an updated V10 engine that powered the Arrows A22 throughout the 2001 season.
