2003 Porsche 996.2 GT3 Cup
Description:
The Porsche 996 GT3 Cup is a purpose-built factory race car developed for the Porsche Carrera Cup, GT3 Cup Challenge series, as well as the international Porsche Super Cup series. The 996 GT engine is naturally aspirated and based on "The Mezger" racing engine used in the 962 and 911 GT1 race cars. The 996 GT3 Cup got updates every season, usually in the form of more power and other performance enhancements. The updated 996.2 version was introduced in 2002 featuring improved aerodynamics, cooling, and weight savings along with a more powerful engine rated at 385 HP and 288 ft/lbs. of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle with shortened fourth, fifth and sixth gear ratios. Braking performances of the Cup-Carrera not only surpass the performance of all predecessors thanks to the optimized ventilation of the front wheel-housing. For the first time in Cup-car history, the front brake discs grew by 20 mm to 350 mm featuring six-piston fixed calipers. This car was optioned with the new 4-channel ABS, modified for motorsport purposes.
This 2003 GT3 was originally ordered and sponsored by AASCO in Anaheim California and was driven by drivers Gary Becker and Joe Kunz. In 2004, AASCO Motorsports went on to sponsor 2 other cars and 8 drivers in the 42nd Annual 24 hours of Daytona. Logbooks indicate the car was later campaigned by the second owner in the Pacific Northwest SCCA regional racing. The third owner competed in Time Attack 1 at Pikes Peak in June of 2015 and the car appeared in the September issue of Panorama. The fourth owner competed in PCA Club Racing and after a restoration of its paint and original AASCO reflective orange and carbon livery it was featured on the cover of Rocky Mountain Region’s High Gear. Showing to be in excellent shape for a veteran race car, this example of a GT3 Super Cup is a true piece of racing heritage and looks the part.
The current owner purchased the car in September of 2021, and it has seen limited use at DE events while being carefully maintained using only genuine parts. A total of 45 hours has been logged on the chassis over the past 3 years. It is being offered for sale with a total of 54.7 engine hours and 62.4 hours on the gearbox since its last rebuild. Chassis dyno testing in April of 2024 documented both horsepower and torque values consistent with the manufacture’s specifications. Maintained professionally, the car remains almost completely original in ready-to-race condition. It is equipped with an all-business lightweight racing interior that has been outfitted with all necessary safety equipment. Critical maintenance and safety updates include the installation of fully adjustable Motion Control shocks, a fire suppression system, Schroth 6-point safety harness, Sabelt GT3 driver and passenger seats. In July of 2024 both front 6 piston calipers and rear 4 piston calipers including brake lines and mounting hardware were replaced with new but Porsche-Brembo calipers.
