Royale RP17 Sports Racer rolling chassis (BDG possible)
Description:
ROYALE RP17 SPORTS RACER. Chassis number RP17/2. This is the original genuine 1972 race car show model as shown on page 132 in the Royale book " Nowhere To Hide" (copy included in sale). Originally owned by Hans Baumhardt and raced in 1973 European endurance events with several co-drivers including the late Tom Pryce. It was campaigned in France and then imported into the USA by Hugh Kleinpeter, then Royale USA dealer, and raced competitively by Larry Wilson for over 20 years winning 30 vintage races including three Gold Cup wins and five top-three finishes at Virginia International Raceway. Full Wilson Collection history is documented and it is supplied with SVRA Gold Medallion Certificate of Authenticity. I bought the car from the Wilson Collection and imported it to the UK, paying the VAT.
This advert is for the rolling chassis, excluding engine and gearbox (see below) so that the buyer has the option of installing a Lotus Twin Cam or a Pinto engine for less costly running. I was intending to race in Thundersports but the car is eligible for Masters and THE NEW MRL 2-LITRE SPORTS CAR SERIES! The car runs on BBS wheels with polished lips and gold centres, and there are two sets with wets and dry slicks. It has a set of Penske racing shocks which alone cost nearly $10,000 including set up costs. There is a large dry sump oil tank with heater. Larry Wilson spent a lot of cash making sure the car was competitive.
The car is being sold as a rolling chassis separately from the BDG engine and the FT200 gearbox, both of which are freshly rebuilt. The wheels, shocks and brakes are probably worth the asking price and if it does not sell I shall break it but that would be terribly sad... The bodywork would go to one of the other RP17s currently racing.
Separately from the car I would look for £35k for the BDG (complete with Kinsler mechanical fuel injection and a MSD ignition system) and £15k for the FT200, and both are built up with a fresh clutch if there is interest in the whole assembly. I spent £24,500 with Geoff Richardson to have the engine comprehensively rebuilt including new block, cylinder head and one cam carrier plus pistons and conrods. The bench test gave 289bhp. The gearbox was rebuilt by Racing Transmissions at a cost of almost £6,000 including a new bearing carrier, crown wheel and pinion. Asking £50k for both, including the (new) clutch.
Here's a link to the original advert where I bought the car, for better professional photos etc...
