Genuine 1963 Mk1 Lotus Cortina FIA race car
Description:
Comes with original buff logbook, current V5, old MOT certificates, tax disc, previous sales invoices and MSA historic technical passport papers from 30th April 2009.
I purchased this car in 2014 from a Silverstone Auctions sale as a third race car intending to campaign it. The only reason I am selling is because I quickly realised having more than two race cars is problematic because it is difficult to run/maintain them all in a season, so its spent most of its time sat at the back of my garage and consequently I have not really used it and could do with the space and some cash back!
The previous owner was Nick Whale (owner of Silverstone Auctions) and, prior to that, Neil Davies. Nick campaigned it for a couple of years as a front running car and ditto Neil before that. The only reason Nick sold it was to help fund the repurchase of his old BMW M3 Group A touring car which came up for sale. I am not sure why Neil sold it to Nick
It was built and prepared for FIA salon car racing by Guy Smith Motorsport originally for Neil Davies in 2009/10 with reliability and strength in mind and to a ‘Goodwood friendly’ specification from a solid accident-free shell. The car ran competitively and reliably in U2TC, BRSCC, Masters and HSCC events and was co-driven by the likes of Richard Dutton and Neil Brown.
The car was upgraded in 2013 with a new Neil Brown Engineering full spec race engine, upgraded front damper legs, new exhaust manifold, new springs, new MSD ignition box, new starter motor, new clutch and flywheel, new tachometer etc. It proved to be a competitive and highly enjoyable car that benefitted from the input and expertise of Richard Dutton and technical upgrades by Fortec Motortsport.
At the start of my ownership, I had the car assessed by Alan Henderson Racing (who prepared my Cortina GT) and they charged me around £5k for improvement works largely focusing on the suspension, uprated half shafts etc. Its had the odd outing since with regular fluids changes and a few replacement parts.
The car has never had an accident or racing incident.
Probably remissly, we have never had the engine on a dyno or the car on a rolling road! Within the paperwork there is a statement that the previous engine had 174 bhp and 134f t/lbs torque – I cannot imagine the current Neil Brown Engineering will be less than that, as at that time his engines were the best available.
A 4:4 diff is fitted.
As can be seen from the paperwork in the photographs, the car comes with good provenance to confirm its authenticity and extensive bills corroborating all above.
The car is available with a second set of wheels.
