Aston Martin DBRS9

Description:

Aston Martin Racing took the opportunity to unveil the DBRS9 on their stand within the paddock at Le Mans, just a couple of days before the 73rd running of the 24-hour race, 16th/17th June 2005. Aimed at the top end of the track day market, club racers, National GT and a future GT3 class, the DBRS9 was a pure race car and not homologated for use on the road.

Whilst the DBRS9 was effectively based on the road car DB9, it has many features of the full GT1 spec DBR9. The two cars have similar chassis, carbon bodywork and suspension lay-out, and the engine and drivetrain have been developed by the same team of engineers. The 5.9 litre engine was an uprated version of that fitted to the road car with power varying from 500bhp to over 600bhp for ‘G Specification’ cars. The DBRS9 could be built with either a manual transmission or a sequential transaxle, with the latter arguably the most desirable.

The most significant difference from the road car was that the kerb weight was down to just 1280kg, a massive 480kg weight loss. This was mostly due to the extensive use of carbon composites and polycarbonate side windows. Common to all three models was the bonded aluminium tub and aluminium roof panel.

The car we are pleased to offer for sale is chassis number DBRS9/2, the second car of just 26 examples manufactured by Prodrive at Aston Martin Racing’s engineering facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire. The car was delivered new in May 2006 to Aston Martin Works team Barwell Motorsport and was optioned with the “G specification” engine and sequential gearbox.

During its opening season at the 2006 British GT Championship, competing in the GT3 category, the car was successfully driven to outright victory, winning the GT3 Championship piloted by Leonid Machitski and Jonathan Cocker. The Aston Martin was also campaigned in the FIA European GT3 season that year, with its best result being 4th place at Dijon in September. This was the only DBRS9 to achieve championship win at the British GT Championship, making it a significant part of Aston Martin competition history.

After its victorious inaugural season, DBRS9/2 was sold to Australian racer John Kaias in 2007 who shipped it to Australia and went on to campaign the car in the Australian GT Series in 2007 and 2008. The best results were on 13 July 2008 at the Eastern Creek International Raceway, where Kaias finished 3rd, and twice in 1st across three races. The Aston Martin remained in Australia when it was acquired by the respected racing team Eggleston Motorsport and raced from 2011 to 2014, further campaigned in the Australian GT Championship. The car was driven nine times by Ben Eggleston, who achieved a podium finish on three occasions.

In 2019, chassis number DBRS9/2 was acquired by an Aston Martin collector in the United Kingdom who brought the car home and soon after commissioned a full cosmetic restoration, returning the car to its winning 2006 British GT Championship livery. The car was repainted in its attractive and original hue of Verde Inglese by marque specialists Prestige Paintworks Ltd and its period-correct decals were extensively researched and applied.

It sits today in fantastic condition and maintains a spares package in addition to an extensive history file detailing all race results, ownership history and supporting photographs. Configured in the ultimate 600BHP + ‘G’ Specification with six speed sequential gearbox, this championship winning example must be considered as one of the most significant DBRS9 examples of all the 26 cars constructed. It would be highly eligible for a number of historic race meetings including Aston Martin Masters and the Invitation Class of Peter Auto Endurance Racing Legends.
