Mike Pilbeam has a very enviable reputation as a successful designer and developer of race cars across the spectrum of motorsport, including hillclimb, F1 and touring cars. In 1988 his company moved into world sportscars and achieved further success with the MP84, which won the 2000 FIA Sports Car Championship, finished third in its class in 2001 and took three class wins in the American Le Mans Series in 2002. Further developments of the MP84 concept saw it re-launched as the MP91 in 2003. 

Originally based on an MP84, this example was upgraded to an MP91 in 2003 and run in the American Le Mans Series by Jeff Bucknum. It was then sold to a German competitor in 2007 who ran it in national events. Subsequently owned by Kevin Pullan from whom the current owner acquired it. 

MP91-02 has since undergone a complete nut and bolt rebuild by Mirage Engineering. Following this the Pilbeam was tested and entered in the Masters Endurance Legends event at Zandvoort in July 2022, where it performed superbly.

The MP91 has an aluminium honeycomb monocoque chassis clothed in carbon bodywork. It is powered by a low-mileage 3.0 litre V6 Nissan engine, which produces 375 bhp and drives through a Hewland NLT 6 speed sequential gearbox. The car weighs only 720 kg and represents a very cost effective, reliable and competitive package for historic motorsport, with the availability of excellent back-up from the factory, if required.

Eligible for high profile events in Masters and Peter Auto, as well as Le Mans Classic, the Pilbeam is shown being tested recently by Mirage. It is currently at their workshops in Norfolk undergoing final preparations, where it is available for viewing by appointment only please.
